Mild 3.0-Magnitude Earthquake Jolts Bangladesh’s Narsingdi District

A minor earthquake measuring 3.0 on the Richter scale rattled parts of Bangladesh early on Monday morning, causing brief alarm among residents in the central region, although no casualties or property damage have been reported.

According to official data released by the Seismic Observatory of the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD), the seismic tremor was detected precisely at 5:32 AM local time. The epicenter of the quake was traced to the Shibpur upazila within the Narsingdi district, situated approximately 47 kilometres north-east of the capital city, Dhaka. BMD meteorologists confirmed that the hypocentre of the earthquake was localized at a relatively shallow depth of 10 kilometres beneath the Earth’s surface.

Seismic Data Overview

  • Time of Occurrence: 5:32 AM (BST), Monday

  • Magnitude: 3.0 on the Richter scale

  • Epicentre: Shibpur, Narsingdi District

  • Distance from Capital: 47 km North-East of Dhaka

  • Focal Depth: 10 km below the surface

  • Impact & Damage: No casualties or structural damage reported

Due to the shallow focal depth, light tremors were felt by early risers in Narsingdi and neighboring districts, including peripheral areas of the Dhaka division. However, given its low magnitude on the Richter scale, the event did not trigger any significant structural degradation or disruption to daily infrastructure and public utilities.

Bangladesh remains geographically vulnerable to seismic activity due to its proximity to the active boundaries of the Indian, Eurasian, and Burmese tectonic plates. Regions in the north and north-east of the country, along with the central fault lines surrounding the Madhupur Tract, experience periodic low-to-moderate intensity quakes. Geologists frequently point out that while minor quakes measuring around 3.0 magnitude are common and generally harmless, they serve as a standard reminder of the region’s active tectonic setting. Emergency service authorities and meteorologists continue to monitor regional seismic activity closely, confirming that no immediate foreshocks or major aftershocks have been recorded following the event.
