The death toll from sudden flooding in Nepal and China’s Tibet region has risen to 1,273, while 4,757 people remain missing, according to figures released by authorities. Among those still unaccounted for are 844 foreign nationals.
The latest figures, released on Thursday (3 September), show the scale of the disaster across the two neighbouring regions. Nepal has recorded the overwhelming majority of the reported deaths, with 1,252 people killed in flooding that struck the country last week. More than 4,200 people are still missing, according to Nepalese government data.
In neighbouring China, local authorities have reported 21 deaths and 541 missing people in the affected areas of Tibet. Of those reported missing in China, 261 are foreign nationals.
Search and rescue operations continued on Thursday in areas hit by the flooding, as emergency workers sought to locate people who remain unaccounted for. The efforts have been complicated by widespread damage and disruption to essential infrastructure.
Road networks have been cut off in several affected areas, making it difficult for rescue teams to reach isolated communities.
