A dispute over domestic abuse turned fatal on Saturday night in Kishoreganj’s Pakundia upazila, where a 20-year-old man lost his life following a brutal violent altercation with his elder brother. The incident occurred in the Chardeokandi area of Mathkhola Union, leaving the local community in a state of shock and grief. Law enforcement officers reacted swiftly to the crime, arresting the suspect shortly after the fatal stabbing took place.

The deceased has been identified as Riyad Miah, son of the late Abul Kashem. According to residents and family members, Riyad struggled with severe substance abuse. His addiction had long cast a shadow over the household, as he routinely became violent when demanding money to purchase drugs. On the day of the tragedy, Riyad had allegedly assaulted his mother once again after she refused to give him money to satisfy his addiction.

His elder brother, Hridoy Miah, who resides and works in Dhaka, returned to the family home later that evening. Upon learning of the assault against their mother, Hridoy sought an explanation from his younger brother. What began as a verbal confrontation quickly spiralled out of control. The argument rapidly escalated into a heated physical brawl between the two brothers.

During the height of the violent struggle, Hridoy reportedly seized a sharp knife and stabbed Riyad directly in the chest. Riyad collapsed to the ground, heavily bleeding from the severe wound. Neighbours rushed to the scene after hearing the commotion and managed to transport the critically injured young man to the Pakundia Upazila Health Complex. However, the attending medical staff pronounced him dead on arrival, noting that the chest injury had proven fatal before emergency care could be administered.

News of the killing sparked immediate tension throughout the village. Officers from Pakundia Police Station were dispatched to the site to maintain order and secure the crime scene. Arifur Rahman, Officer-in-Charge of Pakundia Police Station, confirmed that police had taken Hridoy Miah into custody immediately following the incident.

Investigators are currently working to reconstruct the exact sequence of events that led to the stabbing, including how the weapon was obtained during the argument. Police confirmed that legal procedures, including an autopsy and the formal filing of charges, are now underway to ensure a thorough investigation into the fratricide.
