A long-standing manhunt concluded on Friday afternoon when law enforcement officers apprehended a high-profile fugitive in Patuakhali. Abul Bashar, a local resident facing active arrest warrants across multiple serious charges, was cornered and detained by the district’s Sadar police station personnel.
The arrest took place at approximately Friday afternoon near the Star Restaurant at the municipality’s Chowrasta intersection. Bashar, hailing from the Town Bahalgachhia neighbourhood within Ward 1 of the Patuakhali municipality, had successfully evaded police capture for a prolonged period by maintaining a low profile and shifting locations. Local authorities confirmed that he was the subject of active court warrants stemming from nine separate criminal complaints, which prominently featured charges related to narcotics trafficking and armed robbery.
Investigators stated that local syndicates dealing in illicit drugs allegedly operated under Bashar’s direct control or heavy influence. Beyond drug-related offenses, local residents voiced serious grievances regarding his alleged involvement in land encroachment, claiming he previously seized control of a public canal and utilised rogue elements linked to his narcotics ring to manage operations on occupied public property. Whispers regarding Bashar’s meteoric financial rise have circulated through the community for years. According to community accounts, he originally earned a modest living as a farmhand working in someone else’s poultry enclosure before mysteriously accumulating substantial wealth and properties spanning Patuakhali and the capital city, Dhaka.
Police officials detailed the painstaking operational efforts required to execute the outstanding warrants. Assistant Sub-Inspector Ripon of Patuakhali Sadar police station noted that tracking down the elusive suspect required deploying tactical surveillance strategies over a considerable timeframe before successfully executing the arrest.
Prior to being transferred into judicial custody, Bashar vehemently rejected all accusations levelled against him by law enforcement and neighbours. Claiming total innocence, he maintained that the legal filings were entirely fictitious and part of a malicious local conspiracy orchestrated by adversaries attempting to ruin his reputation.
Confirming the formal proceedings, Patuakhali Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Moniruzzaman Monir stated that the accused faced nine distinct court-ordered arrest warrants encompassing narcotics and robbery offences. Following his capture after months of evading the judiciary, Bashar was immediately produced before the local court to face trial for his pending charges.
