It also unintentionally shattered the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) playoff aspirations of the Jamaica Kingsmen, who were left counting the cost of an unused airline ticket and an early tournament exit.
Heading into the third day of the Edgbaston Test, the match appeared destined for a swift conclusion. Trailing England by a massive 320 runs on first innings, Pakistan’s second effort had faltered early, reaching just 52 for two by the close of day two. Anticipating a collapse on Friday, the Jamaica Kingsmen made arrangements to fly out Pakistani opener Saim Ayyub. The left-hander had been in fine form in the CPL, amassing 127 runs across three innings, including a century. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) agreed to release Ayyub immediately upon the Test match’s conclusion, prompting the Caribbean franchise to book his flight for Friday evening.
Jamaica desperately required their star batsman in Bridgetown for a high-stakes, must-win fixture against the Barbados Tridents scheduled for Saturday night. But Rajaullah had other plans.
When the pace-bowling all-rounder walked out as the ninth batsman, slightly over an hour of play remained in the day. A heavy innings defeat for Pakistan seemed inevitable. Instead, Rajaullah spearheaded a remarkable counter-attack alongside Mohammad Abbas. The pair forged a dramatic 121-run partnership for the ninth wicket off just 123 deliveries, with Abbas contributing a vital 42 runs. Even after Abbas departed, the debutant continued to boundary-ride, adding a further 10 runs with final batsman Mohammad Ali.
By the time Rajaullah was dismissed for a blistering 81 off 63 balls in the final over of the day, Pakistan had not only averted an immediate defeat but established a lead of 129 runs, pushing the contest into a fourth day.
With his international duties extended into the weekend, Ayyub had no choice but to miss his Barbados-bound flight. Denied the services of their form opener, the Jamaica Kingsmen slumped to an agonizing two-wicket defeat against the Tridents on Saturday night. The loss officially eliminated the franchise from the CPL playoff race, turning a lower-order Test match fightback in Birmingham into an unexpected sporting catastrophe in the West Indies.
