Harry Brook produced a blistering century and Jos Buttler struck an aggressive 80 as England began their three-match T20 international series against Sri Lanka with a commanding 119-run victory in Southampton.
England, sent in after losing the toss, amassed 254 for four from their 20 overs. Sri Lanka never came close to matching that scoring rate during the chase and were bowled out for 135 in 19 overs.
The result gave England their biggest T20 international victory over Sri Lanka by runs. It was also England’s fourth-largest winning margin in T20 internationals, underlining the scale of their performance at the Ageas Bowl.
England made a flying start with the bat. Debutant Anuerin Donald immediately attacked Maheesh Theekshana, hitting the spinner for a six and a four in the opening over. Donald eventually departed for 12, but England had already established a rapid scoring tempo.
Buttler then took centre stage. He struck four consecutive boundaries in an over from Dushmantha Chameera, forcing Sri Lanka to alter their plans early in the innings. Brook joined the attack and the pair continued to find boundaries with remarkable regularity.
England raced to 90 runs during the six-over powerplay. The fifth over, bowled by Dunith Wellalage, yielded 30 runs, with Brook taking particular advantage by hitting three sixes and three fours.
The acceleration continued after the powerplay. Buttler reached his half-century from 29 balls, while Brook was even quicker, completing his fifty in just 20 deliveries. England reached 134 for one after 10 overs, leaving Sri Lanka facing a rapidly escalating challenge.
Buttler and Brook then produced a substantial partnership. Buttler was eventually dismissed by Wanindu Hasaranga after making 80 from 44 balls. His innings contained eight fours and three sixes, while his partnership with Brook produced 128 runs from only 60 deliveries.
Buttler’s departure did little to slow Brook. The England captain continued attacking and reached his century from just 42 balls, adding another record to an already outstanding innings.
Brook’s century was the fastest T20 hundred recorded at Southampton. The previous mark at the venue had been held by Australia’s Aaron Finch, who had reached three figures from 47 balls. Brook’s 42-ball century was also the third-fastest T20 international hundred by an England batter.
The milestone also strengthened Brook’s place among England’s leading T20 century-makers. He now has two T20 international centuries, putting him level with Buttler in second place on England’s list. Phil Salt remains at the top with four centuries.
Brook’s innings helped England finish on 254 for four, leaving Sri Lanka with a target of 255. The visitors needed a strong beginning to keep pace with the required rate, but instead found themselves in trouble almost immediately.
Sri Lanka lost three wickets for just 32 runs during the powerplay. The early collapse prevented the visitors from establishing the kind of partnership required for a successful chase. As wickets continued to fall, the asking rate became increasingly difficult to manage.
Wellalage was Sri Lanka’s highest scorer with 33 runs, while Dasun Shanaka made 24. Neither contribution was enough to change the course of the innings, with the rest of the batting line-up unable to build a substantial partnership.
Sri Lanka were eventually dismissed for 135 in the 19th over, falling 119 runs short of England’s total.
England’s bowlers maintained the pressure created by the huge first-innings score. Sonny Baker claimed three wickets, while Jamie Overton and Liam Dawson took two each. Their efforts ensured that Sri Lanka could not recover from the early loss of wickets.
Brook was named Player of the Match after his outstanding contribution with the bat. His rapid century, supported by Buttler’s explosive 80 and a disciplined bowling display, gave England a strong opening result in the series.
England now lead the three-match series 1-0. The second T20 international is scheduled for tomorrow, giving Sri Lanka an immediate opportunity to respond after a heavy defeat in the opening match.
