A five-year-old boy drowned after falling into a water-filled ditch near his home in Saltha upazila of Faridpur on Wednesday (16 September).
The child, identified as Md Abdur Rahman, was the son of Robi Fakir of Majardia village in Majardia Union. The incident occurred at around 11.30am while he was playing with other children near a water-filled ditch beside his home.
According to local accounts, Abdur Rahman had been playing near a pond-like ditch belonging to Aminur Sardar when he fell into the water unnoticed. The other children apparently did not immediately realise what had happened.
At the time, four-year-old Ismail Hossain was also nearby. He reportedly saw Abdur Rahman go under the water and quickly returned home to alert others.
After receiving the news, local residents rushed to the spot and began searching the ditch. They eventually rescued the child from the water and took him to Nagarkanda Upazila Health Complex in a critical condition.
Doctors at the health facility examined Abdur Rahman but declared him dead.
The incident has brought renewed concern over the safety of young children around ponds, ditches and other open water bodies in rural communities. Children can easily move out of sight while playing, particularly in areas where homes are located close to water. Even a brief lapse in supervision can result in a serious accident.
The circumstances described by local residents indicate that the boy was playing normally shortly before the incident. There was no immediate indication that anyone had noticed him falling into the water until Ismail saw him.
The death has left Abdur Rahman’s family and the local community mourning the loss of a young child. His age and the sudden nature of the incident have added to the distress among residents of Majardia village.
Saltha Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Babulur Rahman Khan confirmed the child’s death.
The incident also highlights the need for greater caution around uncovered water bodies, particularly where young children live or regularly play. Close supervision and keeping children away from potentially dangerous areas can be crucial in preventing such accidents.
