Escaped Death-Row Inmate Rearrested in Chittagong After Two Years

A condemned murderer who staged a successful escape from the high-security Kasimpur Central Jail has been recaptured by law enforcement in Chittagong following an intelligence-led operation.

The fugitive, identified as 35-year-old Md Bahadur Mia, was apprehended on Friday afternoon by a specialized team from the Special Response Battalion (SRB)-7. Acting on precise covert intelligence regarding his hideout, officers ambushed the suspect around 12:10 pm in the Foy’s Lake vicinity, situated within the jurisdiction of the Akbar Shah Police Station in Chittagong city.

Bahadur, the son of Siraj Mia, hails from Kanchan Nagar village under the Chandanaish Upazila of Chittagong district. He was serving a capital sentence at Kasimpur Central High-Security Jail in Gazipur—a facility reserved for high-profile, high-risk convicts—until his escape on 6 August 2024. His absconding coincided with widespread unrest and security breaches across several correctional institutions in Bangladesh during early August 2024, triggering a prolonged manhunt that lasted nearly two years.

Following his flight from custody, authorities launched a formal criminal investigation. A case was subsequently registered on 15 August 2024 at the Konabari Police Station under the Gazipur Metropolitan Police (GMP). The penal charges filed against him under various sections of the Penal Code specifically addressed the prison breach, conspiracy, and unlawful evasion of official custody.

Despite evading detection for almost two years, Bahadur’s attempt to remain under the radar ended when regional intelligence networks identified his movement in Chittagong. SRB-7 confirmed that while specific details regarding his hideouts and survival tactics during his period on the run remain under investigation, his location was tracked through targeted surveillance.

Assistant Superintendent of Police and Assistant Director (Media) of SRB-7, A R M Muzaffar Hossain, confirmed that the arrest represents a significant breakthrough in bringing escaped high-value convicts back to justice. Following preliminary processing, Bahadur was formally handed over to the officers at Konabari Police Station in Gazipur. He faces immediate return to penal confinement alongside ongoing judicial proceedings for his escape case.
