A local political figure in Shahrasti, Chandpur, has sparked widespread public outcry following allegations that he absconded with the wife of a foreign expatriate. Sheikh Rahmat Ullah, the convener of the National Citizen Party (NCP) for Shahrasti Municipality, stands accused of fleeing the area alongside Morium Begum, the wife of Ibrahim Khalil, a migrant worker currently employed in Bahrain. The victim’s family has formally lodged a written complaint with the Shahrasti Model Police Station, prompting a law enforcement investigation into the matter.
According to police sources and local residents, Morium Begum had been residing at her marital home in Shahrasti while her husband worked abroad to support the family. Sheikh Rahmat Ullah, who is also her cousin, had reportedly developed a close relationship with her over an extended period. Tensions had been brewing within the household as relatives grew increasingly aware of the situation. The affair eventually culminated on Saturday night, 19 September, when Morium Begum left her marital residence in the company of Rahmat Ullah, abandoning her two young children. Both individuals have since turned off their mobile phones, severing all contact with their families.
Following an unsuccessful overnight search across potential whereabouts, the family sought police intervention the following morning. On Sunday, Morium Begum’s father-in-law, Harunur Rashid, accompanied by her two heartbroken daughters—Fateha Jahan, aged 10, and Farhan Jahan, aged 6—arrived at the police station to file the formal charge. In a poignant turn of events, Sheikh Rahmat Ullah’s own wife and relatives also arrived at the police station around the same time. The two young girls were seen weeping openly, pleading with police officials to trace and return their mother safely.
Harunur Rashid stated in his complaint that his son had been working tirelessly overseas to secure a better financial future for his family. He alleged that Morium Begum took advantage of the situation by absconding with substantial savings in cash along with valuable gold jewellery, leaving the family facing profound financial destabilisation and social distress. Jahangir Alam, the brother-in-law of Ibrahim Khalil, noted that the family had previously detected signs of an improper relationship and had informed Khalil in Bahrain, but the pair vanished before any domestic resolution could be reached.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Shahrasti Model Police Station, Mir Mahbubur Rahman, confirmed the receipt of the written complaint. He stated that the authorities are treating the matter with utmost seriousness, adding that active legal measures and tracking procedures are underway to locate the missing individuals and ensure a thorough investigation into the allegations.
