Three people, including Tuhin Reza, a central vice-president of Chhatra League, have been arrested in a special operation by the Detective Branch (DB) of police in Jhenaidah.
The arrests were made on Wednesday night in the Yafat Filling Station area of Jhenaidah Sadar upazila. Police said the operation was conducted as part of a wider drive based on confidential information received by the law enforcement agency.
The other two arrested individuals have been identified as Emdadul Haque Sohag, 37, joint convener of Dhaka Metropolitan Sramik League and owner of Yafat Filling Station, and Saddam Hossain, 32, a Chhatra League leader from Naldanga Union in Jhenaidah Sadar upazila. Reza is 33.
Shariful Islam, officer-in-charge of the Jhenaidah DB, said a team of detectives carried out special operations at several locations across the district after receiving confidential information. The team subsequently conducted an operation in the Yafat Filling Station area and arrested the three men.
After their arrest, the three were taken to the DB office for initial questioning. They were later handed over to Kaliganj police station, according to the officer.
Police said the three men were already facing a case at Kaliganj police station under laws relating to sabotage and counter-terrorism. The authorities are now processing their arrests in connection with that case and preparing to produce them before a court.
The police have not, however, disclosed the specific sections of the case or provided detailed information about the allegations made against the accused. Details of the incident that led to the case, including the precise nature of the alleged offences, have also not been made public.
According to the DB, the legal process concerning the three arrested individuals is continuing. Their alleged involvement in the case will be dealt with through the relevant judicial process, while further action will be taken after they are produced before the court.
The latest arrests were part of special operations being conducted by the DB in different parts of Jhenaidah. Police said such operations are continuing across the district on the basis of information received by law enforcement agencies.
The three men have now been brought into the ongoing legal process in connection with the pending case. Further details about the allegations and the court’s proceedings are expected to become clearer as the case progresses.
