Student Leader Returns Stolen School Feeding Milk Following Outrage

A student political leader in Pirojpur’s Nesarabad upazila has admitted to removing 30 packets of milk meant for primary school pupils, later purchasing and returning 27 replacement packets after the incident sparked widespread condemnation.

The accused, Nadim Mahmud, holds the position of joint general secretary within the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) unit at Government Swarupkati College. The misappropriation occurred at South Binna Kailantari Government Primary School (School No. 148) in Baldia Union, where the milk had been stored in the library under the government-sponsored school feeding initiative.

The incident unfolded on Friday, 25 September, as police personnel and local politicians affiliated with the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) gathered at the school during a dragon boat race (Nouka Baich) along the adjacent Binna canal. Exploiting the commotion whilst teachers were occupied entertaining guests, Nadim and several associates quietly seized 30 packets of milk from the library.

Assistant teacher Mst Asha Begum noted that the missing inventory went unnoticed until Wednesday, 30 September, when educators prepared to distribute the monthly nutrition supplies to students. Subsequent inquiries confirmed that Nadim’s group had taken the cartons to consume nearby. Facing public exposure, Nadim returned to the school on Wednesday afternoon to hand over 27 replacement packets acquired from an authorised dealer, claiming that he and three companions had already consumed the remaining three packets.

Defending his actions, Nadim claimed he was unaware that the milk packets were reserved exclusively for young schoolchildren. This sentiment was echoed by Md Mohibullah, general secretary of the Binna Young Men’s Club—where Nadim serves as cultural secretary—who admitted that taking student supplies was thoroughly inappropriate regardless of intent.

Political officials have moved quickly to distance the organisation from the scandal. Md Imran Hossain Sojib, president of the Nesarabad Upazila Chhatra Dal, stated that the party does not tolerate wrongdoing and that Nadim’s actions were entirely personal.

Simultaneously, administrative accountability has extended to school authorities. Headmaster Md Nurul Islam explained that he was away from the library using the washroom when the breach occurred. However, because the school leadership failed to notify education officials for nearly a week, Upazila Primary Education Officer Md Moinul Islam has formally issued a show-cause notice to the headmaster, demanding a written explanation within three working days. Administrative officials confirmed that further decisions regarding negligence and procedural failures will follow after reviewing the response.
