Lewandowski Breaks Ronaldo Record in Nations League Rout

Robert Lewandowski produced a memorable performance as Poland swept aside Romania 6-0 in their UEFA Nations League meeting in Warsaw. The Poland captain scored a hat-trick, reached another major milestone for his country and surpassed Cristiano Ronaldo’s record for the oldest player to score three times in a Nations League match.

Lewandowski was 38 years and 42 days old when he completed his hat-trick, setting a new age record in the competition. Ronaldo had previously held the mark after scoring three goals for Portugal against Switzerland in 2019, when he was 34 years and 120 days old.

The record was the latest achievement in a long international career for Lewandowski, who remains Poland’s leading attacking figure. His performance against Romania combined individual milestones with a commanding team display, although Romania’s early dismissal made the task considerably harder for the visitors.

Poland began the match on the front foot, applying pressure and looking to move the ball quickly into attacking areas. Romania’s situation deteriorated midway through the opening half when defender Radu Dragusin was shown a straight red card for fouling Lewandowski inside the penalty area.

The decision left Romania with 10 men and gave Poland an immediate opportunity to take control. Lewandowski stepped up to take the resulting penalty in the 24th minute and converted it to put the hosts ahead.

The goal also carried personal significance. It was Lewandowski’s 90th goal for Poland at international level, marking another landmark in his career with the national team.

Poland continued to press after taking the lead, while Romania faced the difficult task of defending with a numerical disadvantage. The hosts went into the interval with their advantage intact and returned for the second half determined to increase the pressure.

Just two minutes after the restart, Lewandowski scored again. In the 47th minute, Nicola Zalewski supplied the pass and the Poland captain completed the move with a straightforward finish to make it 2-0.

The home side then extended their advantage further. An own goal added to Romania’s problems before Piotr Zielinski and Jan Bednarek also found the net, leaving Poland firmly in control as the match entered its closing stages.

Lewandowski was not finished. In the 86th minute, he scored his third goal of the night to complete his hat-trick and take Poland’s total to six.

The treble lifted Lewandowski’s international goal tally to 92. It also strengthened his position among Europe’s most prolific international scorers. Only Portugal’s Ronaldo and Belgium’s Romelu Lukaku were ahead of him on the all-time list cited in the report.

For Poland, the result was an emphatic victory built around sustained attacking pressure and an efficient display in front of goal. For Lewandowski, it was a night of several milestones: his 90th international goal came early in the contest, his hat-trick took his international tally to 92, and he became the oldest player to score three times in a Nations League match.

The performance also underlined the significance of Lewandowski’s longevity at international level. At 38, he continues to occupy a central role for Poland and remains capable of producing decisive moments in major international fixtures. His three goals in Warsaw ensured that the match would be remembered not only for Poland’s 6-0 victory, but also for the new record attached to their captain.
