Pedestrian Killed by Speeding Vehicle on Dhaka-Khulna Highway

A thirty-eight-year-old worker lost his life in the early hours of Sunday after being struck by an unidentified speeding vehicle while crossing the Dhaka-Khulna highway in Bhanga, Faridpur.

captured local concern as the victim, identified as Samar Ali, succumbed to his injuries before reaching medical care. Samar, son of Abdus Sattar from Kuralchar village in Jamalpur’s Islampur Upazila, was travelling with colleagues in a pickup van from Dhaka towards Khulna for work-related duties.

The fatal collision occurred at around 4:30 am, directly in front of the Bhanga Highway Police Station. According to eyewitnesses and local residents, the work crew had pulled over near the police station to take a brief break and have breakfast after travelling through the night. Having finished his meal, Samar attempted to cross from the southern side of the highway to the northern side. At that precise moment, an oncoming vehicle travelling from Gopalganj towards Dhaka hit him violently, knocking him onto the tarmac.

His colleagues rushed to his aid immediately, lifting his severely injured body from the road and conveying him straight to the nearby Bhanga Upazila Health Complex. However, upon arrival, the attending emergency physician pronounced him dead after preliminary examinations confirmed no vital signs remained.

The identity of the hit-and-run vehicle could not be established immediately, as the driver sped away from the scene under the cover of early morning darkness. The tragedy has plunged Samar’s family and co-workers into deep grief, turning an ordinary professional journey into a sudden tragedy.

Confirming the incident, Touhid Ahmed, Officer-in-Charge of Bhanga Highway Police Station, stated that law enforcement officers promptly initiated the required legal procedures. He confirmed that the body of the deceased has been formally handed over to his relatives following the completion of necessary official formalities.

The accident highlights persistent safety concerns along major national corridors like the Dhaka-Khulna highway, particularly during pre-dawn hours when reduced visibility and high-speed long-haul vehicles create hazardous conditions for pedestrians trying to cross.
