Police have arrested Anwar Hossain Khan Joty, 65, a senior local leader of the Awami League and former chairman of Hargaj Union Parishad, in Saturia upazila of Manikganj.
Joty was arrested during a special operation in the Hargaj area on Tuesday evening, 6 October. Police said the arrest was made on the basis of a specific complaint against him.
Joty served as senior vice-president of the Saturia upazila unit of the Awami League and previously held the elected post of chairman of Hargaj Union Parishad. He is the son of the late Momtaz Uddin of Balurchar village in Hargaj Union.
His arrest brings renewed attention to the legal proceedings involving political figures at the local level. Police have not provided detailed information about the specific allegations against Joty, and the matter is expected to be examined through the legal process.
Joty was elected chairman of Hargaj Union Parishad in the 2021 union council elections, contesting on the Awami League’s boat symbol. He subsequently served as the elected head of the local government body.
The union parishad is an important tier of local administration, dealing with a range of community-level responsibilities and public services. As a former chairman, Joty had previously been involved in local government activities as well as political affairs in the area.

Mohammad Mosharraf Hossain, officer-in-charge of Saturia Police Station, confirmed the arrest. He said the required legal procedures would be completed before the accused is produced before a court.
