Garment Workers’ Pay Protest Disrupts Traffic in Uttara

Hundreds of garment workers staged a road blockade in the Azampur area of Uttara, in the Bangladeshi capital, Dhaka, on Monday, 12 October, demanding higher wages. The demonstration began at around 11 am, bringing traffic to a halt on one side of the road and causing congestion in surrounding areas. Commuters, office workers, public transport passengers and pedestrians faced disruption as a result.
According to police sources, workers from several garment factories in the Dakshinkhan area gathered in Azampur to press for an increase in their wages. They subsequently took up positions on the road and began protesting, disrupting the movement of vehicles along the busy route.
The partial blockade affected traffic flow in the area, with the disruption also having an impact on nearby roads. As Azampur is a busy part of northern Dhaka, restrictions on vehicle movement can create delays for people travelling to work and other destinations. Public transport passengers may also face longer journeys when traffic becomes congested.
However, no precise information was immediately available on how far the congestion extended or how long traffic remained disrupted. The number of factories represented in the demonstration and the total number of workers involved had not been independently established.
KHM Ershad, Additional Deputy Commissioner for Dakshinkhan, confirmed the blockade. He said workers from various garment factories in the area had gathered on the road at around 11 am to stage their protest. Police personnel were deployed at the scene and in surrounding areas to help maintain order and manage the situation.
The specific reasons behind the workers’ demand for higher wages were not immediately clear. There was no confirmed information about the amount of the proposed increase, the factories involved or whether the workers had previously raised their concerns with management. The positions of the factory authorities were also unavailable at the time of reporting. It remained unclear whether any discussions had taken place between the workers and their employers.
Bangladesh’s ready-made garment industry is one of the country’s most important economic sectors and a major source of export earnings. It employs a large workforce and plays a significant role in the country’s industrial development. Wages, working conditions and the cost of living remain important issues for workers across the sector.
For garment workers, wage demands are closely linked to their ability to meet everyday expenses. However, the available information did not establish which particular financial or workplace concerns prompted Monday’s demonstration. Any assessment of the workers’ specific grievances would therefore require further information from the protesters and the factory authorities.
Industrial protests can affect more than factory operations. When demonstrations take place on busy roads, they can disrupt daily commutes, delay public transport and place additional pressure on surrounding streets. The impact can be particularly significant in densely populated urban areas, where large numbers of people rely on the same transport routes.
In Azampur and neighbouring areas, the blockade raised concerns about inconvenience for workers, commuters and other road users. Restoring normal traffic while allowing the protesters to present their demands remains an important consideration in such situations.
Dialogue between workers and factory management could help clarify the demands and identify possible ways forward. Any resolution, however, would depend on the concerns raised by the workers and the response from the relevant employers.
As of the time of reporting, there was no confirmed information about what steps the factory authorities intended to take, whether negotiations had begun or when the protesters would leave the road. Police remained deployed in and around the area to help control the situation.
