Tribute Paid to Veteran Leader Motia Chowdhury on Second Anniversary

Bangladesh paid tribute to veteran politician Motia Chowdhury on Friday, 16 October 2026, marking her second death anniversary. Affectionately revered across the political spectrum as Ognikonnya or the “Firebrand Woman,” her extraordinary life and career spanned over six decades, bridging the gap between fierce street-level activism and high-level national governance.
Born on 30 June 1942, Motia Chowdhury emerged as a towering political figure during the turbulent 1960s. As a prominent student leader at the University of Dhaka, she led courageous demonstrations against the autocratic Pakistani military regime, campaigning tirelessly for democratic rights, regional autonomy, and social justice. Her fiery speeches and fearless defiance of state oppression quickly earned her the moniker Ognikonnya, a title that came to define her public persona throughout her political trajectory. During the 1971 Liberation War, she remained actively involved in mobilising political support and advancing the nation’s fight for independence.
In post-independence Bangladesh, Motia Chowdhury successfully navigated the transition from opposition activist to senior administrator. Serving multiple terms as the Cabinet Minister for Agriculture, she introduced pivotal reforms aimed at enhancing food security, modernising agricultural inputs, and ensuring the timely distribution of seeds and fertilisers to rural farmers. Her hands-on administrative style and deep commitment to agrarian welfare earned her widespread popularity amongst farming communities, who affectionately referred to her as Krishoker Motia (“Farmers’ Motia”). Later in her career, she held the prestigious post of Deputy Leader of Parliament, where her legislative experience and firm discipline helped guide parliamentary proceedings.
Despite holding immense power and influence for decades, Motia Chowdhury remained famous for her austere, unpretentious lifestyle. She consistently rejected personal luxury and ostentation, setting a rare benchmark for integrity and simplicity in public life.
Following her passing in Dhaka on 16 October 2024, her legacy continues to inspire political observers and young leaders across the nation. Commemorative events held on Friday reflected on her monumental contributions to democratic movements, women’s political empowerment, and national development, underscoring her enduring status as a cornerstone of contemporary Bangladeshi history.
