Ishwardi, Pabna witnessed violent clashes between BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami activists on Thursday (27 November), leaving more than 100 people injured, including Jamaat’s parliamentary candidate for Pabna-4, Abu Taleb Mondal. The confrontation took place at around 5 p.m. at Jogir Mor in the remote Char Gorgori area.
According to local sources, Mondal departed from Rahimpur Bot Tala in Sahapur Union with a convoy of roughly 150 motorcycles en route to Char Gorgori Alhaj Mor. Violence erupted when the convoy reached Jogir Mor, resulting in clashes between activists of the two political parties.
Muhammad Saidul Islam, Secretary of Ishwardi Upazila Jamaat-e-Islami, claimed that tensions had escalated the previous day. On Wednesday (26 November), Dr Iqbal Hossain, a Jamaat member in Char Gorgori, was allegedly assaulted by supporters of BNP’s primary candidate, Habibur Rahman Habib, and Sahapur Union Krishok Dal President Mokkel Mridha. In response, Jamaat organised a demonstration on Thursday, which reportedly provoked attacks from Mridha’s supporters using sticks and indigenous weapons.
During the clashes, Abu Taleb Mondal and over 100 activists were injured. Mondal’s vehicle was vandalised, and four motorcycles were set on fire. In contrast, Sahapur Union BNP General Secretary Ramzan Ali alleged that the Jamaat convoy fired more than 40 rounds of bullets, injuring over 50 BNP activists.
Firefighter Asaduzzaman of Ruppur Green City Modern Fire Service confirmed that he visited the scene and saw the fire brought under control, with several motorcycles burnt. Efforts to contact the Officer-in-Charge of Ishwardi Police Station, A S M Abdur Noor, were unsuccessful at the time of reporting.
