Standing Committee Leaders Welcome Tarique Rahman

After an absence of 17 long years, BNP’s Acting Chairman, Tarique Rahman, has returned to Bangladeshi soil. His arrival at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport was met with an enthusiastic reception from the party’s Standing Committee members, who greeted him warmly within the airport’s red zone.

Stepping off the aircraft, Tarique Rahman waved to the assembled supporters, acknowledging their welcome with visible delight. He initially exchanged cordial greetings with the party’s Secretary General, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir. This was followed by handshakes and brief conversations with other prominent figures, including Standing Committee members Mirza Abbas, Salahuddin Ahmed, and Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, among others.

The returning flight, operated by Biman Bangladesh Airlines, touched down at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at 11:40 am. Earlier, the same aircraft had landed at Osmani International Airport in Sylhet at 9:55 am. Following a ground turnaround, it departed Sylhet for Dhaka at 11:12 am. Prior to reaching Bangladesh, the flight had departed London Heathrow Airport on 24 December at 6:15 pm local time (12:15 am Bangladeshi time, 25 December).

The historic occasion drew a massive crowd along the July 36 Expressway in Dhaka, as millions gathered to welcome their beloved leader. Undeterred by the biting cold, supporters had begun assembling overnight, braving the winter chill to secure spots for the rally. As morning progressed, the crowd swelled, with chants and slogans filling the air.

Observations from the scene revealed groups of BNP supporters and affiliated organisations arriving from nearly all corners of the capital. Many walked in organised processions, while others travelled by buses, trucks, and motorcycles, all enthusiastically shouting slogans along the 300-foot stretch leading from the airport. The atmosphere was charged with anticipation and excitement, marking a historic moment in the party’s political timeline.
