Jahangirnagar University Suspends Student Over Alcohol Discovery

Jahangirnagar University has taken stringent disciplinary action against a student following the discovery of 21 bottles of alcohol in a hall room. The university administration has suspended the student, Fazle Azwad, for a period of one year, according to an official order signed on Monday afternoon by the Acting Registrar, A B M Azizur Rahman.

Fazle Azwad, a third-year undergraduate, is enrolled in the Department of Government and Politics, 52nd batch, and is a residential student of Mir Mosharraf Hossain Hall. The official order cites the university’s disciplinary framework, stating:

“Based on the investigation report submitted by the Hall authorities, and in accordance with Section 4(1)(g) of the 2018 Student Discipline Ordinance, Fazle Azwad is hereby suspended from Jahangirnagar University for one year.”

University sources revealed that the incident came to light late on Sunday night, when information surfaced suggesting the presence of prohibited substances in Room 723 of Kazi Nazrul Hall. Hall authorities, accompanied by leaders and members of the Hall Student Council, conducted an inspection. During the search, 21 bottles of alcohol were recovered from beneath the bed and inside a locker.

When questioned, the student admitted that the alcohol had been procured from border areas near Jamalpur, raising concerns over illicit sourcing and student safety on campus.

Fazle Azwad had also contested the Jahangirnagar University Central Students’ Union (JAKSU) elections held on 11 September, representing the student wing in Mir Mosharraf Hossain Hall as a candidate for the post of Social Service Secretary. However, the local branch of the student organisation later clarified that he is not a formal member of the party.

The university has emphasised that the decision reflects its zero-tolerance policy towards alcohol and illicit substances on campus, and serves as a stern warning to the student community to uphold discipline and maintain a safe, substance-free environment.
