Family Mourning RAB Officer’s Death in Chattogram

The family of Deputy Additional Director (DAD) Motaleb Hossain of RAB‑7 remains engulfed in profound grief following his fatal shooting by armed assailants in Chattogram. The killing of the senior Rapid Action Battalion officer has sent shockwaves through both the law‑enforcement community and the wider public, raising renewed concerns about security and justice.

On Tuesday afternoon, 20 January, an emotionally distraught atmosphere prevailed at the RAB‑7 headquarters in Patenga, where Motaleb Hossain’s widow, Shamsunnahar, spoke to journalists. Overcome with sorrow, she struggled to hold back tears as she recalled her husband’s dedication to the nation and the circumstances of his death.

“My husband was a true patriot,” she said. “He was always prepared to sacrifice his life for the country. He placed the nation’s welfare above his own family. Is this how a patriot should be killed? Such injustice is impossible to accept. If this is allowed to happen, who will be willing to serve as a soldier in the future?”

Describing the condition of her husband’s body, Shamsunnahar said the injuries were harrowing. She recounted broken bones, deep cuts on his back, and clear bullet wounds, with blood still visible. “That sight is unbearable for me,” she added. “I demand a fair and transparent trial. Those responsible must face the highest punishment.”

Their eldest son, Mehedi Hasan Bhuiyan, currently a first‑year honours student in the Department of Statistics at Tejgaon College, also spoke of his anguish. He appealed directly to the government to ensure exemplary punishment for the perpetrators. “After 5 August, we believed we were living in a truly free country,” he said. “Never did we imagine that someone could be killed in such a brutal manner. Justice must be ensured for my father.”

Standing beside Shamsunnahar were the couple’s two daughters—Shamima Jannat, a secondary school student in Class Ten, and Ishrat Jahan Muntaha, who studies in Class Five. Witnesses noted how young Muntaha repeatedly tried to console her grieving mother, a poignant scene that underscored the family’s devastating loss.

According to the family, they first learned of Motaleb Hossain’s death through a television news ticker at their residence in Pilkhana, Dhaka. Upon receiving the news, Shamsunnahar immediately travelled overnight with her children to Chattogram.

Law‑enforcement and RAB sources have confirmed that a full investigation is under way. Authorities have assured that all necessary measures are being taken to identify and apprehend those responsible, and to bring them swiftly to justice.
