“Bangladesh couldn’t play in the World Cup, but their preparations are complete.”

The T20 World Cup is fast approaching, yet Bangladesh will remain absent from the tournament, leaving the spotlight on preparation rather than participation. The Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) was meticulously structured this season with the global event in mind, aiming to give players match practice in the absence of other international fixtures. While the domestic tournament has provided the squad with competitive exposure, the ultimate utility of this preparation is now in question.

For security reasons, Bangladesh remains steadfast in its decision not to participate in the World Cup in India. The stance was reiterated on Thursday following a meeting between players and Sports Advisor Asif Nazrul. Prior to the BPL, the Bangladesh squad had planned to travel to India two days after the final for two preparatory matches ahead of the main tournament. Those plans have now been shelved, making Bangladesh mere spectators at the upcoming global event.

Reflecting this uncertainty, Chattogram Royals captain and World Cup squad member Sheikh Mehedi Hasan remarked, “Everyone focused on the final and our preparation for it. The World Cup is not in our hands; it is in the management’s hands.”

The uncertainty has also influenced the BPL’s formalities. The customary trophy unveiling ahead of the final did not take place, with the highly anticipated £25,000 trophy remaining behind the scenes for nearly a month. It will finally be revealed on the day of the final, two hours before the evening clash at 6 PM.

On the field, the tournament presented a mixed picture. Top-order batting proved challenging for many players initially. However, Towhid Hridoy and Tanzid Hasan Tamim regained form towards the end, producing notable innings. Towhid has accumulated 382 runs, currently the second-highest in the tournament, while Parvez Hossain Emon has topped the run charts with 395 runs thanks to consistent performances. Conversely, key batsmen Saif Hasan and Liton Das struggled to maintain form throughout.

Bowling, however, offered a brighter outlook. Shariful Islam emerged as the leading wicket-taker with 24 wickets, supported by notable performances from Nasum Ahmed, Mustafizur Rahman, Sheikh Mehedi Hasan, and Tanzim Hasan Sakib. Despite these promising efforts, the platform to translate this preparation into international impact has been indefinitely delayed.
