A shocking act of violence erupted in Tungipara, Gopalganj, on Sunday night when a 50-year-old woman was fatally attacked with a hammer during a family dispute over land. The incident occurred around 9:30 pm in the Patgati Madhyapara area of the upazila. The victim, Nahida Begum, died on the spot, while her son, Mohibullah Osta, sustained serious injuries in the same assault.
Nahida was the widow of the late Shariful Osta, a resident of the same village. Her son, Mohibullah, is a second-year undergraduate student at Tungipara Government College. According to local sources, the attack stemmed from a longstanding conflict over land between Nahida’s late husband and their neighbour, Kader Osta.
On the night of the attack, Kader’s son, accompanied by several others, reportedly forced entry into Mohibullah’s home by breaking down the door. In the ensuing struggle, Mohibullah attempted to defend himself, prompting Nahida to intervene. She was struck repeatedly with a hammer, sustaining fatal injuries.
Local residents rushed Nahida to Gopalganj 250-Bed General Hospital, where doctors pronounced her dead. Mohibullah was transferred to Gopalganj Medical College Hospital, where he is currently receiving treatment for his injuries.
Dr Manjurul Kabir of Gopalganj 250-Bed General Hospital stated, “Nahida was brought to the hospital around 9:45 pm. She had already passed away before arrival. There were multiple contusions on her head and body.”
Tungipara police officer-in-charge Ayub Ali confirmed that authorities inspected the crime scene promptly. No formal case has yet been filed, as Mohibullah remains unwell, but the local situation is reported to be under control.
