Azad Rahman was a shining star in the realm of Bengali music. He was simultaneously a vocalist, composer, lyricist, and music director—whose creativity enriched and diversified the world of Bengali songs.
He was born on 1 January 1944 in the Bardhaman district of West Bengal, India. From early childhood, his deep passion for music led him to the discipline of classical music. He earned a Bachelor’s degree in Khayal music from Rabindra Bharati University. Later, he became recognised as one of the pioneers of Khayal music in Bangladesh; many regard him as the father of Khayal music in the country.
His journey in film music began in 1967 with the popular Tollywood film Miss Priyongboda, where he worked jointly as a music director alongside Subir Sen. His first film in Bangladesh for which he composed music was Agantuk, directed by Babul Choudhury.
In the 1970s, numerous songs composed and performed by him won the hearts of audiences. Particularly popular were the songs “Bhalobashar Mullo Koto” from the film Epar Opar, “Koro Mone Bhakti Maayer” from Dumurer Phool, and “Dora Kata Dag Dekhe Bagh Chena Jay” from Dasyu Bonhur.
Beyond film music, he made an unforgettable contribution to patriotic songs. His composition “Jonmo Amar Dhonno Holo Ma Go” remains a powerful symbol of emotion, patriotism, and national consciousness for Bengalis.
In recognition of his outstanding contribution to Bangladeshi film and music, he was awarded the National Film Award in the categories of Best Music Director and Best Playback Singer.
In his personal life, his wife was the renowned singer Selina Azad. Their three daughters—Rumana Azad, Rozana Azad, and Nafisa Azad—grew up in a deeply musical environment. Together, they formed the “Azad Sisters” and regularly release songs on their YouTube channel.
Alongside his musical career, he was equally devoted to writing. His two-volume book on music, Bangla Khayal, was published by Bangla Academy.
He also engaged in innovative work related to public awareness on health issues. In 1976, he directed the adult awareness film Gopon Kotha, featuring Kabori and Sohel Rana.
This legendary artist passed away on 16 May 2020, leaving the mortal world behind. However, his melodies, songs, and creations continue to live on in the hearts of Bengalis. In the history of Bengali music, Azad Rahman will forever be remembered with respect and love.
Tribute.
