A series of violent confrontations illuminated by torchlight erupted across multiple villages in Brahmanbaria’s Sarail upazila on Friday night, leaving at least 25 people injured and prompting a swift police response. The clashes, which occurred in separate locations within Sadar and Chunta unions, were reportedly triggered by longstanding disputes, a minor traffic altercation involving vehicle horns, and tensions over prayers at a local mosque.

According to police and local accounts, the first incident began in the evening in the Alinagar area of Sadar Union. A microbus driver, Mohammad Joy, allegedly sounded his horn while passing through Pathanpara village in an attempt to clear pedestrians from the road. This led to an argument with a relative of Idris Khan, a resident of the area. The verbal dispute quickly escalated as residents from both Pathanpara and Alinagar mobilised, later joined by individuals from Jilkadarpara and Sarail village. The situation deteriorated into a full-scale clash involving crude weapons.

Witnesses reported that the confrontation intensified under torchlight as both sides engaged in brick-throwing, chasing, and counter-chasing across the locality. The chaotic scene left at least 10 people injured, who were subsequently taken to Sarail Upazila Health Complex and other nearby medical facilities for treatment.

In a separate incident later that night in Chunta Union’s Chunta village, a longstanding rivalry and disagreement related to mosque prayer arrangements sparked another violent confrontation. Two local factions—identified as the Sofor group and the Srabon group—became embroiled in a prolonged clash lasting approximately one hour. The confrontation involved crude weapons and widespread pursuit tactics, creating panic among residents and disrupting normal village life. This second incident resulted in at least 15 injuries.

Police from Sarail থানা quickly intervened and brought both situations under control. Officer-in-Charge Monjur Kader Bhuiyan stated that law enforcement teams reached the scenes promptly after receiving reports and successfully restored order. He confirmed that the situation is now calm and that legal proceedings in connection with both incidents are underway.

Authorities have expressed concern over the recurring nature of such violent local disputes, particularly those escalating from minor disagreements into organised clashes involving entire communities.
