Angry Residents Detain Power Worker Over Severe Load Shedding

Public frustration over erratic utility services reached a boiling point in Ishwardi, Pabna, where angry locals detained a rural electricity meter reader for nearly four hours. The incident took place on Tuesday afternoon at the Alhaj Mor area of Chargargari in Sahapur Union, as a direct backlash against intense heatwaves, crippling power outages, and erratic billing practices.
The detained employee, Ainul Hossain, works as a meter reader for the Dashuria Zonal Office under the Pabna Rural Electricity Samity-1. According to local accounts, residents of Chargargari have been enduring severe and frequent load shedding for a considerable period. This constant disruption has paralyzed daily life, leaving families struggling against stifling summer temperatures. Beyond the persistent blackouts, local consumers have raised serious grievances regarding exorbitant and inaccurate electricity bills, commonly referred to as “phantom bills,” which add financial distress to their ongoing physical discomfort.
The situation escalated on Tuesday afternoon when Hossain arrived in the Chargargari area to record routine electricity meter readings. The village was experiencing an unannounced power cut at the time of his visit. Sweating in the oppressive heat, frustrated residents surrounded the meter reader, firing questions about the dismal state of power supply and the unfair billing system. Tensions quickly flared, prompting the crowd to detain Hossain while they summoned senior officials of the rural electricity authority to the scene to answer for the community’s suffering. Chanting slogans against utility staff, the residents kept him confined for roughly four hours before finally releasing him.
Reflecting on the tense encounter, Ainul Hossain acknowledged the deep frustrations harboured by the public. He noted that while he understood the agony caused by the excessive outages, the power crisis extended far beyond a localized village problem and pointed to broader structural challenges. Following instructions from his senior superiors, he suspended his meter-reading duties and left the area.
Local resident Akmal Pramanik voiced the collective anger of the neighborhood, stating that prolonged load shedding combined with institutional mismanagement had made daily existence virtually unbearable. Union Parishad member Rupan Khatun confirmed that residents confronted the meter reader out of sheer desperation brought on by the intense heat, subsequently escalating the issue to local authorities.
Efforts by journalists to reach Rathindranath Barman, the Deputy General Manager (DGM) of the Dashuria Zonal Office of Pabna Rural Electricity Samity-1, for comment were unsuccessful as he did not answer his phone. The incident highlights a growing wave of public discontent regarding essential infrastructure reliability across rural regions.
