Argentina Beat Brazil to Claim Third Straight Title

Argentina have won the Under-17 South American Futsal Championship for a third consecutive time, defeating Brazil 2-1 after extra time in a dramatic final on Sunday.

The decisive match was played at the SND Arena in Asuncion, Paraguay, which hosted the tournament. Argentina once again demonstrated their strength at youth level, overcoming one of their fiercest rivals to retain their grip on the regional competition.

The victory was particularly significant given Argentina’s difficult route to the final. Brazil had beaten them 2-0 during the group stage, giving the final an added edge. Argentina therefore entered the title decider with the memory of that defeat still fresh, but produced a markedly stronger performance when the trophy was at stake.

Tomas Barrios and captain Lorenzo Sampedro scored Argentina’s goals. With neither side able to settle the contest within normal time, the final went into extra time before Argentina eventually secured the decisive advantage.

Goalkeeper Santino Sanchez also played a crucial role in the triumph. His saves kept Argentina in contention during difficult periods of the match, particularly towards the end of the first half. His contribution became even more important as the contest grew increasingly tense.

Brazil were also reduced to a player after Gian Sonier was shown a red card for violent conduct towards an opponent. The dismissal changed the dynamics of the match and gave Argentina an opportunity to put greater pressure on their rivals during a crucial stage of the final.

The title also underlined the remarkable record of Argentina coach Santiago Basile. A world champion as a player in 2016, Basile has now won all three South American Under-17 championships in which he has taken charge of the age-group side. His record represents an extraordinary run of success in a competition where Argentina have consistently faced strong challenges from Brazil and other leading South American teams.

For the young players, the triumph represents more than another medal. Matches against Brazil at this level provide valuable experience of playing under intense pressure, while success in regional competition can help establish a pathway towards senior international futsal.

Argentina’s senior national futsal coach Matias Lucuix was also present in the stands for the final. His attendance offered an opportunity to assess emerging talent at close quarters, particularly as youth competitions can serve as an important source of future senior players.

The victory also carried a strong sense of redemption for Argentina. Their 2-0 group-stage defeat by Brazil had been followed by another painful loss earlier in the year, when Brazil beat them in the final of the Youth Pan American Games in Panama.

That made Sunday’s result particularly satisfying. Argentina not only overturned their earlier defeat in the same tournament but also denied Brazil another major youth title.

The Argentina-Brazil rivalry has long been one of the defining sporting contests in South America, and futsal is no exception. Even at Under-17 level, matches between the two sides tend to carry considerable intensity, with technical quality and tactical discipline often tested by the pressure surrounding the occasion.

Argentina ultimately handled that pressure better. They recovered from their group-stage setback, survived Brazil’s strongest periods and produced the winning moments when they mattered most.

The third consecutive South American title strengthens Argentina’s position as one of the leading forces in youth futsal in the region. More importantly, it gives a generation of young players the experience of winning high-pressure international matches—experience that could prove valuable as they progress towards senior football.
