A fatal rail collision involving two passenger trains has occurred in the Bedford area of England, resulting in one death and injuries to at least 90 passengers. The incident took place on the evening of Friday, 19 June, as confirmed by British Transport Police. In a published report details of the accident on Saturday, 20 June. The National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers (RMT) verified that the deceased individual was the driver of one of the trains involved.
According to the East of England Ambulance Service, out of the 90 injured passengers, 11 remain in an extremely critical condition, whilst 22 others sustained serious injuries. Following the collision, an emergency response was deployed, with more than 20 ambulances dispatched to the site to facilitate rescue operations.
Deputy Chief Constable Stuart Cundy of the British Transport Police stated that, given the severity of the situation, the incident has been formally declared a “major incident”, and emergency rescue operations are ongoing.
The United Kingdom’s Transport Secretary, Heidi Alexander, confirmed that the collision involved two passenger trains operated by East Midlands Railway. A spokesperson for the railway company detailed that the crash occurred between a London-bound service departing from Corby and another London-bound service departing from Nottingham. Both the police and rail regulatory authorities have initiated an investigation to determine the exact cause of the collision and to ascertain how both trains came to be operating on the same track.
Following the accident, rail authorities announced a complete suspension of train services running into and out of London via the affected route. All remaining scheduled services on this line for the rest of the day have been cancelled, and passengers have been advised to utilise alternative travel routes.
