Attempted Murder Complaint Filed Against Ten Senior NCP Leaders

Senior leaders of the National Citizens Party (NCP), including Central Chief Co-ordinator Nasiruddin Patwari and Northern Region Chief Organiser Sarjis Alam, have been named in a criminal complaint alleging attempted murder, physical assault, vandalism, and theft following violent clashes in Habiganj.

The formal written complaint was lodged at Habiganj Sadar Model Police Station on Thursday (30 July) at approximately 10:00 pm by Md Iqbal Hossain Rukon, Joint General Secretary of the District Chhatra Dal. The case explicitly names ten prominent NCP figures while bringing allegations against an additional 40 to 50 unnamed individuals.

Alongside Mr Patwari and Mr Alam, the accused include Nur Alam Chowdhury, Fakhrul Zakir, A. Hai Kamal, Ruham Gazi, Mahbubul Bari Chowdhury Mubin, Nahid Uddin Tarek, Abu Hena Mostafa Kamal, and Wadud Mahmud Chowdhury.

Unfolding of the Clashes

According to the statement submitted to law enforcement, the violence erupted on the afternoon of 28 July between 5:00 pm and 8:00 pm directly in front of the Court Mosque within the Habiganj municipal area. Chhatra Dal activists had assembled at the location to conduct a memorial service and visit the family of Ripon Sheel, who was slain during the July uprising—an event organized in alignment with a central directive from their student body.

The complainant alleged that as the gathering took place, NCP leaders accompanied by a crowd armed with iron rods, local cleavers (ramda), traditional spears (fikol), and brickbats launched a violent assault on the assembled Chhatra Dal members.

Several political workers, including District Chhatra Dal figures Mahfuz Chowdhury and Mozakkir Hossain Imon, sustained severe physical injuries during the melee. In addition to physical harm, the complaint records that the perpetrators forcibly seized mobile phones from five activists—including Mr Rukon, Mr Imon, and Mr Chowdhury—and robbed another individual, Roxy Islam, of Tk 50,000 in cash.

Official Response and Political Background

Addressing media inquiries, Md Zahidul Haq, Officer-in-Charge of Habiganj Sadar Model Police Station, acknowledged receipt of the written complaint. He confirmed that police personnel are scrutinising the allegations and carrying out an initial inquiry. “Should the findings of our preliminary investigation substantiate the claims made in the petition, formal legal proceedings will follow strictly in accordance with statutory procedures,” he affirmed.

The violent incident highlights growing political friction across Bangladesh’s post-uprising landscape, where newly formed citizen platforms and long-established student unions frequently clash over regional mobilization drive and political territory. Local authorities in Habiganj have heightened police patrolling around key public locations to avert further outbreaks of political violence.
