Australia Reach Eighth Women’s T20 World Cup Final

Australia booked their place in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup final for a record eighth time after cruising to an emphatic eight-wicket victory over the West Indies in the first semi-final of the 2026 tournament at The Oval. A disciplined bowling display, led by their spin attack, followed by a commanding unbeaten half-century from Beth Mooney ensured the defending champions secured victory with remarkable ease.

After losing the toss, the West Indies made a steady start with the bat and looked capable of building a competitive total during the powerplay. Their innings, however, unravelled once Australia’s spinners came into the attack. The Caribbean side lost four wickets for just 12 runs in a dramatic collapse, leaving their middle order unable to recover and denying them the momentum needed to post a challenging score.

Captain Hayley Matthews was the top scorer for the West Indies with 30 runs, anchoring the innings before falling to the relentless Australian pressure. Experienced all-rounder Deandra Dottin, who had reportedly fallen ill before the match, recovered sufficiently to bat at No. 8. Her late cameo of 26 from just 16 deliveries provided some much-needed impetus and helped lift the West Indies to a modest total of 125.

Australia’s bowlers once again underlined why they remain one of the most formidable units in world cricket. Off-spinner Ashleigh Gardner was particularly economical, claiming two wickets for only 13 runs from her four overs, including a maiden. Leg-spinner Georgia Wareham and left-arm spinner Sophie Molineux also picked up two wickets apiece, maintaining relentless pressure throughout the innings and preventing the West Indies from establishing any meaningful partnerships.

Chasing 126 for victory, Australia suffered an early setback when in-form batter Ellyse Perry retired hurt after scoring just two runs. The defending champions were further tested after slipping to 43 for two, but Beth Mooney quickly extinguished any hopes of a West Indies comeback.

The left-handed opener produced another innings of the highest quality, striking an unbeaten 61 from only 36 balls, including eight boundaries. Combining composure with calculated aggression, Mooney dictated the chase from the outset. Her latest half-century also carried historical significance, as it drew her level with New Zealand great Suzie Bates for the most fifty-plus scores—eight—in the history of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup.

Gardner complemented Mooney perfectly at the other end, finishing unbeaten on 35 from 20 deliveries. The pair added an unbroken 63-run partnership, steering Australia to victory in just 13 overs and with eight wickets in hand.

The convincing win moves Australia within one match of another world title and further reinforces their remarkable consistency in global women’s cricket. Having lifted their sixth Women’s T20 World Cup crown in 2023, the Australians will now chase a seventh title when they take the field at Lord’s on 5 July.

Their opponents will be determined after the second semi-final between England and South Africa. Regardless of who progresses, Australia will enter the final carrying significant momentum, with their balanced bowling attack and experienced batting line-up once again proving decisive on the biggest stage.
