Bangladesh HP Dominate Nepal to Open Top End Campaign

Bangladesh High Performance (HP) unit launched their Top End T20 series in emphatic fashion, dismantling Nepal ‘A’ by nine wickets at the Marrara Cricket Ground in Darwin. A hostile bowling display orchestrated by off-spinner Mohammad Rubel, followed by a blistering half-century from opener Jisan Alam, saw Bangladesh overhaul a modest target of 100 runs in just 10.2 overs, crossing the line with 58 deliveries to spare.

Winning the toss and opting to field first, Bangladesh skipper Irfan Sukkur watched his bowling unit vindicate the decision straight away. The Nepali top order suffered an immediate and devastating collapse against the new ball, crumbling to a precarious 13 for 5 within the opening powerplay overs. Bangladesh’s seamers found sharp bounce from the hard Australian surface, whilst the spinners maintained tight lines, denying the opposition any room to breathe.

Opener Kushal Bhurtel waged a solitary battle amidst the surrounding wreckage, showing commendable resilience to compile a valiant 46. Nepal found brief respites down the order through Sahab Alam, who made 11, and an unbeaten 11 from tailender Bipin Khatri. The lower order managed to drag the innings through the full quota of 20 overs, eventually finishing on 99 for 9.

Rubel proved the primary architect of Nepal’s undoing, returning outstanding figures of 4 for 18 from his four overs. The off-spinner consistently outfoxed the batsmen with subtle variations in pace and flight. Pace bowler Ripon Mondol, along with Samiun Basir and Rohan Ud Dowla, provided disciplined support with a wicket each, preventing any sustained counter-attack.

Faced with a nominal chase of 100, Bangladesh showed no inclination to play conservatively, keen to boost their net run rate early in the competition. Openers Habibur Rahman Sohan and Jisan Alam took the attack straight to the Nepali bowlers, plundering 32 runs in the first two overs. Although Habibur perished in the third over, the breakthrough failed to disrupt the team’s momentum.

Ariful Islam joined Jisan in the middle, and the pair dismantled the remaining target with surgical precision. Jisan reached his half-century in just 29 balls before finishing unbeaten on 52, striking boundaries across all sectors of the ground. Ariful offered composed support at the other end, contributing a polished 34 not out from 27 deliveries.

The Top End series provides crucial international exposure for Bangladesh’s emerging prospects, acclimatising young cricketers to challenging overseas conditions. Having finished as runners-up in one of their two previous tournament appearances, the HP squad is aiming to go all the way this year. The side will seek to build on this commanding victory when they take on Hobart Hurricanes Academy at the same venue tomorrow.
