Australia Tour Looms With Bangladesh’s Pace Attack Under Pressure

Bangladesh are set to return to Australia for a Test series after a long gap, with the fixtures carrying added significance as part of the World Test Championship cycle. Yet even before the squad is finalised, the visitors are facing a major selection headache, particularly in the pace-bowling department.

The conditions in Australia are expected to encourage a pace-heavy attack, making the availability of frontline fast bowlers a key concern for the selectors. The biggest uncertainty surrounds young quick Nahid Rana, whose participation in the series remains in serious doubt because of injury.

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is expected to provide an official update on Nahid’s latest condition. However, the indications are that the injury he sustained during the tour of Zimbabwe could keep him out of the Australia series. If that proves to be the case, Bangladesh would lose one of their most promising sources of raw pace at a time when their bowling unit is likely to face one of its toughest overseas assignments.

Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto said the decision over injured players was being handled by the medical and management teams.

“Those decisions will be taken by the physio, trainer and management group, and they are managing it accordingly. I do not know much beyond that,” Shanto said when asked about the injury situation.

There is, however, some encouragement for the Bangladesh camp. Experienced wicketkeeper-batter Litton Das is expected to be available for the tour, while left-arm fast bowler Shoriful Islam is also hopeful of returning in time. Shoriful has been going through rehabilitation following his injury and could resume competitive cricket soon if his recovery continues as planned.

Litton, meanwhile, suffered a calf-muscle injury but there is reportedly no major concern over his fitness. After receiving treatment in Singapore, the BCB indicated that the problem was not considered serious enough to threaten his availability for the Australia assignment.

Both Litton and Shoriful are expected to have additional time to prepare before the series, with the Bangladesh squad scheduled to leave for Australia on either 1 or 3 August. That window could prove valuable, particularly for Shoriful, as he works towards regaining full match fitness and rhythm before facing the demanding Australian conditions.

The absence of Ebadot Hossain is another setback for Bangladesh. The experienced right-arm fast bowler has taken leave from the Australia tour for personal reasons, leaving the team with fewer established options in the pace department.

To strengthen the attack, the BCB has reportedly brought right-arm fast bowler Hasan Mahmud back from the Lanka Premier League. He is expected to join the Bangladesh squad for the Australia tour shortly, while Ripon Mondol will take his place in the LPL.

Hasan’s return could ease some of the pressure created by Nahid’s uncertain fitness and Ebadot’s absence. Bangladesh will need a balanced pace group capable of maintaining pressure over long spells, particularly against a strong Australian batting line-up accustomed to playing at home.

The two-Test series is therefore shaping up as a demanding examination of Bangladesh’s depth and adaptability. Australia will start as the stronger side on home soil, but Bangladesh have shown greater competitiveness in Test cricket in recent times and will hope to carry that momentum into the series.

For the selectors, the priority is now clear: assemble the strongest possible squad while keeping a close watch on the fitness of Nahid, Shoriful and Litton. The final composition of the pace attack could have a significant bearing on Bangladesh’s prospects in what promises to be a challenging World Test Championship assignment.
