Bangladesh’s preparations for the upcoming Test series against Australia have been thrown into uncertainty by a growing injury list, with several key players undergoing rehabilitation and facing fitness battles ahead of the challenging assignment. The biggest setback has come in the pace department, with young fast bowler Nahid Rana ruled out of the series altogether.
The Bangladesh Cricket Board’s medical department has officially confirmed that Rana will miss the Australia Tests after suffering a left-side muscle injury during the team’s tour of Zimbabwe. Subsequent scans revealed a Grade 2 side strain, an injury that is expected to require around four weeks for the initial recovery phase.
His rehabilitation will not end there. Once the injury has sufficiently healed, Rana will need another two to four weeks to gradually rebuild his bowling workload and return to competitive intensity. In total, the fast bowler could require between six and eight weeks before he is ready to play again, effectively ruling him out of the entire Australia series.
Rana’s absence is a significant blow to Bangladesh’s pace attack. The young quick has increasingly emerged as a bowler capable of adding pace and aggression to the national side, qualities that could have been particularly valuable against Australia. His ability to generate speed and attack batters could have offered Bangladesh an important option in demanding Test conditions. Without him, the team management will have to reconsider the balance and composition of its bowling unit.
Rana, however, is not the only player whose availability remains uncertain.
Left-arm fast bowler Shariful Islam is also recovering from injury, although his rehabilitation is reportedly progressing satisfactorily. He sustained a Grade 1 left hamstring injury and is scheduled to begin bowling from 29 July as part of his return-to-play programme. His fitness is expected to be assessed on 12 August.
If his rehabilitation continues according to plan, Shariful could find it difficult to make the first Test against Australia. However, should he complete his bowling workload successfully and receive medical clearance, there remains a possibility that he could return for the second Test. His availability will ultimately depend on how his body responds as the intensity of his training increases.
Bangladesh also have uncertainty surrounding their batting and wicketkeeping options. Wicketkeeper-batter Litton Kumar Das is gradually recovering from a left calf muscle injury. As part of his treatment, he recently travelled to Singapore for specialist medical advice and underwent platelet-rich plasma therapy.
Litton is expected to begin a gradual programme of running and fitness conditioning from 28 July, with a fitness assessment potentially scheduled for 13 August. If he completes the rehabilitation process without setbacks, he could come into consideration for the second Test against Australia. His return would be particularly valuable given his experience and role with both bat and gloves.
Right-arm fast bowler Tanzim Hasan Sakib faces a considerably longer recovery timeline. He remains in rehabilitation following his injury, with recent scans and advice from overseas specialists indicating that he needs additional time before resuming full cricketing activity. Another scan is expected in approximately eight to ten weeks, with his eventual return depending largely on how quickly the bone-related injury heals.
At present, the expectation is that Tanzim could return to competitive cricket towards the end of the year. That timeline means he is unlikely to play any immediate role in Bangladesh’s preparations for the Australia series, leaving the selectors with one fewer pace-bowling option during a crucial period.
Experienced left-arm pacer Mustafizur Rahman is another player working his way back to full fitness. He has been undergoing regular rehabilitation after suffering injuries to his right hamstring and calf muscle. A fitness assessment is expected towards the end of the month, after which his bowling workload will be increased gradually if he responds well.
If he successfully progresses through the planned workload and clears the necessary fitness requirements, Mustafizur could potentially become available for national selection after 18 August. His return would provide Bangladesh with valuable experience and a different angle in the pace attack, particularly if the younger bowlers remain unavailable.
The medical update therefore presents a mixed picture for Bangladesh ahead of the Australia Tests. Nahid Rana has been definitively ruled out, while Shariful Islam and Litton Kumar Das could potentially become available for the second Test, provided they complete their rehabilitation programmes and pass their respective fitness assessments. Tanzim Hasan Sakib’s recovery is expected to take considerably longer, while Mustafizur Rahman has a more optimistic pathway towards a return in the second half of August.
The injury situation places additional pressure on Bangladesh’s selectors and team management. Test cricket demands not only a large squad but also sufficient depth to cope with injuries, workload management and changing match conditions. Losing a high-pace bowler such as Rana, while simultaneously monitoring the recoveries of several other players, could force Bangladesh to rethink its preferred combination before the series begins.
For now, the priority will be to ensure that injured players return safely rather than rushing them back. At the same time, the coaching and selection staff will need to keep alternative players match-ready. With Australia presenting one of the toughest challenges in Test cricket, Bangladesh’s ability to maintain a balanced squad could prove just as important as the form of those who eventually take the field.
