After more than a month off, domestic football returns to Bangladesh. The second round ended on 20 October, but national team commitments kept clubs off the pitch for 34 days. Tomorrow, the league resumes with four matches across four venues, signalling a critical phase for the country’s professional football structure.
The spotlight will be on the high-profile Abahani versus Mohammedan clash. Mohammedan, who ended a 22-year title drought last season, have struggled at the start of the current campaign, registering just one point from two matches. Abahani have mirrored their rivals’ poor form. Both sides are under pressure to claim three points. Tensions run high as Mohammedan players have reportedly given the club an ultimatum over unpaid salaries, raising questions about financial management in domestic football.
Tomorrow’s other fixtures include Fortis against Police at Kings Arena, Bashundhara Kings hosting Arambagh in Manikganj, and Fakirerpool Youngmens versus Brothers Union in Munshiganj. Rahmatganj will take on PWD in a single fixture the day after.
The league, which began on 26 September, had not displayed its official logo during the first two rounds. The Petronas-sponsored logo will finally make its debut in the third round. Despite the wait, the design has sparked criticism, with some fans calling it uninspiring. BFF Marketing Committee chairman Fahad Karim defended it, emphasising that it was created with care and that any resemblance to other designs is purely coincidental.
Tomorrow’s matches will test teams’ form after a long hiatus, but off-field issues—from unpaid wages to branding controversies—highlight the ongoing challenges in professionalising Bangladeshi football.
