Dooley Hesitant Over Kyrgyzstan Friendlies Ahead of SAFF

Bangladesh national football team head coach Thomas Dooley has voiced reluctance to accept an invitation from Kyrgyzstan for a tri-nation tournament in Bishkek during the upcoming September FIFA window. The American-German manager prefers organizing friendly matches against similarly ranked opponents to build squad confidence ahead of hosting the SAFF Championship in November 2026.

Speaking to reporters following a National Team Management Committee meeting, Dooley outlined the logistical and tactical challenges the Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) is confronting when arranging international fixtures.

Global Tournament Schedules Limit Option Pool

Dooley highlighted that securing suitable opponents for the September window has proven difficult due to regional tournament commitments worldwide:

  • Widespread Official Tournaments: The BFF made inquiries across member associations in Europe, the Caribbean, and the Arab region, but most teams are already engaged in official confederation competitions, such as the UEFA Nations League and Arab Cup.

  • Unavailable Regional Peers: Efforts to set up a friendly with ASEAN member Singapore were also unsuccessful as Singapore prepares for the ASEAN Championship.

Prioritising Team Morale Before Home Tournament

Kyrgyzstan’s invitation involves competing against higher-ranked nations hovering around the top 100 in the FIFA World Rankings. Dooley expressed concern that taking on significantly stronger opponents right before a major home tournament carries tactical risks.

He emphasized that suffering severe losses against top-100 opposition could damage team confidence shortly before hosting the SAFF Championship. In Dooley’s view, scheduling balanced fixtures against equal or slightly higher-ranked teams provides the most effective pathway to build form, momentum, and tactical consistency.
