Mehedi Hasan Miraz produced a decisive all-round performance as Bangladesh secured a historic nine-wicket victory over Australia in Darwin, recording their first Test triumph on Australian soil. The result represents a landmark moment for Bangladesh cricket and ends a long wait for success against one of Test cricket’s most formidable sides away from home.
Bangladesh entered the final stages of the match needing only 57 runs after Australia were dismissed for 284 in their second innings. Miraz played a central role in creating that modest target, claiming five wickets with disciplined off-spin as Australia’s batting order gradually unravelled. Bangladesh then completed the chase with nine wickets in hand, underlining the authority with which they controlled the match.
The victory carries particular significance because Bangladesh had previously defeated Australia only once in Test cricket, in the 2017 Test in Mirpur. Beating Australia in their own conditions is a considerably greater challenge, making the Darwin result one of the most significant achievements in Bangladesh’s Test history.
Miraz’s five-wicket haul was also notable in the context of visiting spinners in Australia. Before him, India’s Kuldeep Yadav had taken five wickets in Australia’s first innings at Sydney in 2019, while Sri Lanka’s Rangana Herath claimed five for 95 in Australia’s second innings at Hobart in 2012. Miraz’s performance therefore places him among a small group of visiting spinners to have achieved such a feat in Australian conditions.
His contribution was not restricted to bowling. Miraz scored 65 in Bangladesh’s first innings, helping the visitors build a commanding total of 426. His runs, combined with his five wickets, made him one of the match’s most influential performers and demonstrated the value of his role as a genuine all-rounder.
Bangladesh’s bowling attack had already laid the foundation for the victory through Hasan Mahmud’s outstanding first-innings spell. He claimed six wickets as Australia were bowled out for only 198, earning nine wickets across the match and receiving the player-of-the-match award. Hasan’s early breakthroughs ensured that Australia were under pressure from the outset, while Miraz’s spin later tightened the grip.
The visitors’ batting effort was equally important. Their first-innings total of 426 gave Bangladesh a substantial 228-run lead. Tanzid Hasan scored 101, becoming the first Bangladeshi batter to make a Test century in Australia. Najmul Hossain Shanto contributed 84, while Mominul Haque added 49, helping Bangladesh sustain pressure over a prolonged period.
Australia showed signs of resistance in the second innings, led by Cameron Green’s determined 104. His century offered the hosts hope of setting a challenging target. Bangladesh, however, continued to take wickets at crucial moments. Miraz’s control in the middle and latter stages of the innings prevented Australia from turning their recovery into a substantial advantage.
When the final Australian wicket fell at 284, Bangladesh needed only 57 runs. The chase was completed with just one wicket lost, bringing an emphatic conclusion to a match in which the visitors dominated key phases with both bat and ball.
For Miraz, the achievement was deeply personal as well as historic. He expressed his pride at becoming part of such a significant moment for Bangladesh cricket, reflecting the importance of the victory to a generation of players seeking greater success in overseas Test cricket.
The Darwin triumph is therefore more than another entry in Bangladesh’s win column. It is a statement of growing confidence in unfamiliar conditions and evidence that the side can compete successfully against elite opposition away from home. At the heart of that achievement stands Miraz, whose 65 with the bat and five wickets with the ball helped turn a difficult overseas assignment into one of Bangladesh’s most memorable Test victories.
