Bangladesh have received a timely boost ahead of their Test series against Australia, with left-arm pacer Shariful Islam declared fit for the second match after recovering from a hamstring injury.
Shariful successfully passed his fitness test on Monday, clearing the latest hurdle in his recovery. His availability means the 25-year-old can now be considered for Bangladesh’s squad for the second Test, giving the touring side another pace-bowling option as the series progresses.
Bangladesh Cricket Board physiotherapist Mujadded Alfa Sani confirmed that Shariful had completed the required assessment successfully. He said the medical team had informed the management that the pacer was fit and available for selection for the second Test.
Shariful picked up a Grade 1 hamstring injury during Bangladesh’s recent tour of Zimbabwe. The injury ruled him out of the squad for the opening Test against Australia and forced him to begin a rehabilitation programme after returning home.
His recovery has now reached a significant stage. Passing the fitness assessment removes the immediate medical barrier to his selection, although the final decision on whether he plays will rest with the team management and selectors.
Bangladesh will begin the series with the first Test in Darwin on Thursday. The match will mark the start of a demanding assignment against Australia, with conditions expected to make pace bowling an important part of the contest. For Bangladesh, having a fit left-arm seamer available for the latter stages of the series could provide useful flexibility in their bowling combination.
Shariful’s return also gives the management more room to manage the workload of the pace attack across the two Tests. Rather than being limited to the options available for the opening match, Bangladesh could potentially strengthen or alter their combination for the second game depending on conditions, player workload and performance in Darwin.
The second Test is scheduled to begin in Mackay on 22 August. That gives Shariful some additional time to continue his preparation following his successful fitness assessment.
For now, Bangladesh’s immediate focus remains on the opening Test. Shariful will not be available for that match, but his successful recovery has provided a positive development ahead of the second encounter.
After missing the opening match because of injury, the left-arm pacer is now firmly back in contention. His eventual return could add another dimension to Bangladesh’s bowling attack as they look to compete with Australia across the two-Test series.
