MYMENSINGH — Authorities at Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) have served formal show-cause notices on 42 students residing across four residential halls following a series of violent clashes, physical assaults, and widespread property damage that recently disrupted academic life on campus.
The administrative action was officially confirmed on Sunday, 9 August, by the university’s Proctor, Professor Dr Md Abdul Alim. According to the administration, the implicated students have been instructed to submit written explanations in their defense by 11 August.
Proctor Dr Abdul Alim stated that the preliminary show-cause notices were issued on the basis of written complaints lodged by the respective hall administrations, alongside direct observational reports compiled by proctorial body members present during the altercations. He emphasised that those named are being afforded a fair opportunity to present their defense while two separate inquiry committees work to establish the full sequence of events.
Unravelling the Chain of Hall Conflicts
The disciplinary measures follow a volatile series of confrontations that unfolded over two weeks, turning residential quarters into zones of severe unrest. The initial outbreak occurred on 23 and 24 July, when personal grievances escalated into full-scale clashes between residents of Ashraful Haq Hall and Shahid Shamsul Haq Hall. At least 13 individuals sustained injuries during the initial skirmishes, which were marked by aggressive chases and stone-pelting between opposing groups.
Tensions flared anew on 1 August, triggered by arguments within a social media messaging group. The digital dispute swiftly spilled onto the campus grounds, sparking violent clashes between students residing in Suhrawardy Hall and Bhashani Hall that left five more individuals injured. The unrest reached a peak on the night of 2 August, when students from all four residential halls became entangled in widespread, multi-front confrontations.
Structural Damage and Administrative Oversight
The repeated altercations caused notable destruction to university infrastructure. Groups hurled bricks and heavy stones, shattering window panes, damaging main entrance gates, smashing outdoor security lighting, and destroying closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras installed to monitor hall security.
Following the disruption, the BAU administration constituted two high-level investigation committees charged with identifying the key instigators and identifying the root causes of the recurring violence.
Addressing concerns regarding procedural fairness, Proctor Dr Alim reassured the campus community that no innocent student would face penalties. “If any student who received a show-cause notice is proven innocent, no disciplinary action will be taken against them,” he clarified. He noted that the inquiry committees have not yet submitted their final findings to central administration. Once the committee reports and written replies are formally evaluated, the university authority will proceed with appropriate disciplinary action against those found responsible, strictly in line with institutional regulations.
