Background of the Conflict
According to local police officials and eyewitness accounts, the violence stems from a pre-existing dispute regarding regional dominance and political rivalry. On 17 May, Juba Dal leader Kawsar Ahmed and his associates, armed with various weapons, staged a showdown in the area. They subsequently launched a coordinated assault on the Ward No. 2 Juba Dal office, vandalising the property.
Witnesses stated that a gang of eight to ten assailants carried out the raid using local weapons, including machetes (ramdas), chisels, knives, pipes, and iron rods. During the attack, the perpetrators detonated four to five crude bombs (cocktails) to create panic. Mozammel Haque, the local BNP leader, attempted to intervene and resist the attackers, which triggered widespread tension across the surrounding neighbourhood.
Attack During the Arbitration Meeting
In an effort to resolve the ongoing dispute arising from the 17 May incident, a formal arbitration meeting (salish) was convened at Birabo Bazar on Monday evening. Representatives from both factions presented their respective statements and arguments. However, during the proceedings, the supporters of Kawsar Ahmed became highly agitated and launched a sudden assault on the gathering.
The attackers repeatedly hacked Mozammel Haque with sharp weapons, leaving him critically injured. Bystanders rescued the bleeding victim from the scene and initially rushed him to the Rupganj Upazila Health Complex. As his condition deteriorated, he was urgently transferred to the National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation (NITOR), popularly known as the Pangu Hospital, in the capital city of Dhaka, where he remains admitted for treatment.
