Body Recovered from Meghna Riverbank

A 28-year-old man, identified as Rifat, was found dead on the banks of the Meghna River in the char area of Narsingdi two days after he was allegedly killed during a robbery attack in Nabinagar, Brahmanbaria. The discovery has triggered widespread concern and deepened the mystery surrounding the circumstances of his death and the subsequent relocation of his body.

The body was recovered on Tuesday evening from a bushy area near the riverbank at Kandapara Zero Point in Rasulpur village, under Narsingdi Sadar Upazila, close to the Meghna River, Meghna River. Members of the river police, assisted by local residents, retrieved the remains after farmers, while grazing goats along the riverbank, noticed the body partially concealed in vegetation and immediately alerted authorities.

According to family members, Rifat, aged 28, was the son of the late Mostak Ahmed and a resident of Daspotti in Thollakandi village under Nabinagar Upazila, Nabinagar Upazila. Relatives stated that his body bore multiple injury marks, intensifying suspicions of a violent assault.

The victim’s sister, Mukta Begum, later identified the body at the morgue of Narsingdi Sadar Hospital. She alleged that a group of robbers attacked their family home around 11:30 pm on Sunday. During the incident, she claimed, the attackers opened fire, killing Rifat on the spot. She further alleged that the assailants removed the body from the scene and later abandoned it elsewhere to conceal evidence.

Mukta Begum also stated that the family had been unable to trace the body since the incident, until news emerged of its recovery from the riverbank area. She believes the perpetrators deliberately disposed of the body in a remote location to obstruct investigation efforts.

Police officials have confirmed that the matter is under active investigation. Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime) in Narsingdi, Sujan Chandra Sarkar, said preliminary assessments suggest that the body may have been transported from Brahmanbaria to Narsingdi via waterways or another route before being dumped in the char area. Authorities have not yet confirmed the exact sequence of events.

Locals have also speculated that the Meghna River route may have been used to conceal the crime, adding complexity to the investigation. Law enforcement agencies are currently examining multiple angles, including the possibility of inter-district criminal movement and post-mortem relocation of the body.
