A tragic incident occurred in the Gaibandha Sadar Upazila, where a 16-year-old youth was allegedly drowned by two of his friends following an altercation regarding the football rivalry between Argentina and Brazil. The fatal confrontation took place whilst the three acquaintances were bathing together in a local pond, known locally as Hawa Dighi (also referred to as Hawai Dighi). On Tuesday, 16 June, at approximately 5:00 pm, three local youths—Sakib, Rifat, and Rahad Mia—entered the Hawa Dighi pond in the Ramchandrapur Union to bathe. During this time, a verbal dispute arose among them concerning the international football rivalry between Argentina and Brazil. As the argument escalated, Sakib and Rifat reportedly began forcibly submerging Rahad Mia under the water.
The prolonged submersion resulted in Rahad losing consciousness and subsequently drowning in the pond. Following the act, the two accused individuals fled the area to evade detention. Local residents discovered the unconscious youth shortly afterwards and, assuming he was still alive, transported him to the Gaibandha Sadar Hospital. Upon arrival, the attending medical officer examined the youth and pronounced him dead.
The victim has been identified as 16-year-old Rahad Mia, a resident of Tarafkal village within the Ramchandrapur Union of Gaibandha Sadar Upazila. He was the son of Mokbul Hossain. The two accused teenagers are from the same locality; Sakib is the son of Joban Ali, and Rifat is the son of Saidul Islam.

The local police department was notified of the fatality, and the body of the deceased was transferred to the official depository. Commenting on the legislative steps being taken, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Sadar Police Station, Abdullah Al Mamun, stated:
“The body was sent to the Gaibandha Sadar Hospital morgue on Wednesday morning. The exact cause of death will be conclusively determined once the post-mortem report is obtained. As the accused individuals went into hiding immediately after the incident, it has not yet been possible to detain them. A police operation is actively underway to apprehend them.”
