Brazilian media highlights passionate World Cup fanbase in Bangladesh

Although Bangladesh has never participated in the FIFA World Cup, the South Asian nation boasts a footballing passion that rivals any competing country. Whenever the tournament commences, this deep-seated fervour becomes unmistakably apparent across the territory. The entire nation effectively splits down the middle, with citizens pledging unwavering allegiance to the two heavyweights of South American football: Brazil and Argentina.

Whilst European giants such as Spain, France, Germany, England, and Italy enjoy minor pockets of support, the overwhelming majority of Bangladeshi fans back either the Seleção or the Albiceleste. During the World Cup season, the country transforms into a vibrant canvas of green, yellow, light blue, and white. Massive flags are hoisted onto rooftops, supporters clad in official jerseys organise large rallies, and neighbourhoods gather to watch matches broadcast live on giant outdoor screens.

Thanks to social media platforms, this unique football culture has gained international recognition. Recently, Brazil’s premier sports news outlet, Globo Esporte, published a featured report detailing the immense dedication of Bangladeshi Brazil fans. Titled “Bangladesh in Green and Yellow: Find out why Asians love Brazil,” the article shed light on the colourful celebrations observed across the country.

The report noted that countless people fill the streets of the capital, Dhaka, to watch the matches on massive digital displays, erupting in collective joy at every victory secured by Carlo Ancelotti’s squad. Explaining the root cause of this long-distance infatuation, Globo Esporte observed that the phenomenon stems from a lack of domestic success on the international stage. With the Bangladesh national team consistently positioned around 180th in the FIFA world rankings, local fans historically redirected their sporting passions towards the elite South American teams. Interestingly, the Brazilian media outlet asserted that Brazil’s fanbase in Bangladesh actually outnumbers that of their historic rivals, Argentina, particularly highlighting the intense atmosphere in Dhaka and surrounding regions.

This remarkable display of devotion has not gone unnoticed by the players themselves. Following a recent World Cup fixture against Japan, members of the Brazilian national squad expressed their gratitude when approached by journalists in the stadium’s mixed zone. Upon hearing about the widespread celebrations in Bangladesh, star goalkeeper Alisson Becker expressed his admiration. “Oh, nice! Thank you, Bangladesh. I have seen your videos online. They are truly incredible. Thank you so much for supporting us,” the shot-stopper remarked. His sentiments were echoed by veteran midfielder Casemiro, who added, “Thank you, Bangladesh. Thank you for your support for Brazil.”
