A police assistant sub-inspector in Habiganj has been withdrawn from his posting and attached to the police lines after a video surfaced on social media showing him making remarks about taking bribes.
Mohammad Elias Hossain, an assistant sub-inspector (ASI) at Chunarughat Police Station, reportedly made the comments while carrying out an investigation at Ranigaon Bazar. The video, recorded by a local resident, was later circulated widely on social media, prompting criticism and bringing the matter to the attention of senior police officials.
The development was confirmed on Monday night by Mohammad Saiful Islam, officer-in-charge of Chunarughat Police Station. He said Elias had been withdrawn from the station and attached to the police lines pending an investigation.
According to local sources, Elias had recently visited Ranigaon Bazar in connection with an investigation into a case filed by local businessman Noman Mia. During his visit, he reportedly spoke about bribery in the presence of several people.
In the video circulated online, Elias can be heard making a number of remarks about his position as a police officer and the practice of accepting bribes. At one point, he says that he had paid for his police uniform with money obtained through bribery and that he therefore needed to take bribes.
The comments quickly attracted attention after the footage was posted on social media. The video prompted criticism from people who questioned the conduct of a police officer and the apparent nature of the remarks concerning illegal payments.
A local person recorded the exchange on a mobile phone while Elias was speaking. The circumstances surrounding the recording, including the full context of the conversation, are expected to be examined as part of the investigation.
Attempts were made to obtain a response from Elias regarding the video and the comments attributed to him. However, his mobile phone was found switched off, and no statement could be obtained from him.
As the video gained wider circulation, senior police officials became aware of the matter. Elias was subsequently withdrawn from Chunarughat Police Station and attached to the police lines.
Saiful Islam said the video had been reviewed and forwarded to senior officials.
“I have seen the video. It has been sent to senior officials. He has already been withdrawn and attached to the police lines. Appropriate action will be taken against him subject to an investigation,” the officer said.
The police have not yet disclosed the precise disciplinary action that may follow. That decision is expected to depend on the findings of the investigation and any evidence gathered in relation to the incident.
The episode has also drawn attention to the importance of professional conduct among law enforcement officers. Allegations or remarks involving bribery are particularly sensitive because public confidence in policing depends heavily on officers carrying out their duties impartially and without seeking improper financial benefits.
At present, the administrative action against Elias is a withdrawal from his posting and attachment to the police lines. Any further action will be determined after the authorities complete their investigation into the video and the circumstances in which the remarks were made.
