A 14-year-old boy has died after allegedly being stabbed by his 10-year-old younger brother following a family dispute over the death of a pet bird in Lakshmipur. The incident took place on Wednesday (8 July) afternoon at Dilshadpur village in Ward No. 3 of Parbatinagar Union under Lakshmipur Sadar Upazila.
The deceased, identified as Al-Amin, was the son of Jafar Ahmed, a resident of the same area. According to police and local sources, the incident stemmed from an emotional dispute between the two brothers after a pet bird belonging to the younger sibling was killed.
Locals said Babu, aged 10, had a pet bird that was attacked and killed by a cat on Wednesday morning. The child became deeply upset and continued crying throughout the day after losing the bird. At one stage, his elder brother Al-Amin reportedly asked him to stop crying, which led to an argument between the two.
During the altercation, Al-Amin allegedly beat his younger brother. Angered by this, Babu brought a knife and stabbed his elder brother in the chest. Al-Amin suffered serious injuries and was immediately taken to a hospital in Noakhali for treatment.
Despite efforts by doctors, Al-Amin was declared dead while undergoing treatment on Wednesday night. The sudden death of the teenager has created shock and grief among residents of the village.
Local people said they had never witnessed any serious conflict between the two brothers before the incident. They described the incident as tragic and unexpected, saying a minor family dispute had turned into a devastating loss for the family.
Parbatinagar Union Parishad Chairman Wahidur Rahman said he had heard about the incident and expressed sadness over the matter.
Lakshmipur Additional Superintendent of Police (Administration and Finance) Hossain Mohammad Raihan Kazemi confirmed the incident. He said the matter was deeply unfortunate and police had been sent to the scene. Necessary legal action would be taken after investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Police said they were examining all aspects of the case, including the events leading up to the stabbing and the circumstances within the family. The authorities are also looking into how a child became involved in such a violent incident.
The incident has once again raised concerns about children’s emotional control, family supervision and the importance of creating a supportive environment where disputes can be resolved peacefully. Experts often emphasise that children require proper guidance and communication to manage anger and frustration, particularly during moments of emotional distress.
