Cricket thrives on intensity. Wickets are celebrated passionately, rival players exchange words and emotions can run high when a match reaches a crucial stage. Yet there is a clear line between competitive aggression and behaviour that risks crossing the boundaries of sportsmanship.
That distinction has come under renewed scrutiny following incidents involving two of India’s young cricketers, Vaibhav Suryavanshi and Yashasvi Jaiswal. Their recent episodes have prompted debate over whether disciplinary action has been sufficiently firm and whether the governing authorities are doing enough to discourage similar behaviour in the future.
Former India cricketer and commentator Sanjay Manjrekar has questioned the approach taken in both cases. In a post on social media, he addressed the International Cricket Council and the Board of Control for Cricket in India, arguing that repeatedly allowing such incidents to pass without strong consequences could send the wrong message to young players.
Manjrekar’s concern was not simply about punishment. His broader argument was that emerging cricketers need to understand that talent and competitive spirit do not excuse inappropriate conduct. If players are repeatedly given leniency after confrontational incidents, he suggested, they may come to believe that similar behaviour carries little risk.
Jaiswal’s latest incident occurred on the opening day of the ongoing Test in Colombo. After dismissing the Indian opener, Sri Lankan fast bowler Asitha Fernando celebrated the wicket as Jaiswal made his way towards the dressing room. Tensions reportedly rose during the exchange, bringing renewed attention to the manner in which players respond to opponents in emotionally charged moments.
The incident has attracted particular interest because Jaiswal is regarded as one of India’s prominent young batting talents. His aggressive approach is an important part of his cricketing identity, but managing emotions is equally significant as he establishes himself at the highest level.
Suryavanshi, another highly regarded young Indian cricketer, had previously been involved in an incident that also raised questions about on-field conduct. The two cases have consequently been discussed together, despite occurring in different circumstances.
For young players, disciplinary decisions can carry significance beyond a single match. Cricket authorities have to strike a balance between allowing players room to express themselves and ensuring that competitive behaviour does not become personal confrontation. Consistent enforcement of the rules can also help players understand where that boundary lies.
The debate is therefore about more than Jaiswal or Suryavanshi individually. It concerns the standards expected from the next generation of international cricketers. Strong performances may attract headlines, but respect for opponents and control under pressure remain essential parts of the game.
