Repatriation via Flag Meeting
On Saturday, 9 May 2026, at approximately 6:30 pm, a battalion commander-level flag meeting was convened near pillar 2037 in Kuiyapania village, located within the Gopinathpur Union of Kasba Upazila. During this formal diplomatic and security exchange, the BSF officially transferred the remains of the deceased to the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB).
The deceased individuals have been identified as:
Md. Mursalin (20): Son of Hebju Miah, resident of Dhajannagar village, Gopinathpur Union.
Nabir Hossain (55): Son of Makram Ali, resident of Madhupur village, Gopinathpur Union.
The Bangladeshi delegation was led by Lieutenant Colonel S.M. Shariful Islam, Commander of the BGB 60 Battalion. Other notable attendees included the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Kasba Police Station, Nazneen Sultana, and Inspector (Investigation) Ripon Kumar Das. Representing the Indian side was Lieutenant Colonel Ajit Kumar, Commander of the BSF 49 Battalion.
Following the meeting, Lieutenant Colonel S.M. Shariful Islam confirmed that the two men had died from gunshot wounds inflicted by the BSF and that their bodies were received through established bilateral protocols for subsequent handover to their respective families.
Sequence of the Border Incident
The fatalities occurred at approximately 11:05 pm on Friday night within Indian territory, specifically in the Dhajannagar-Pathariaduar area. The BGB’s Sultanpur 60 Battalion officially confirmed the deaths through a press release issued at 10:00 am on Saturday morning.
According to the BGB’s investigative findings, the incident began when a group of approximately 15 Bangladeshi nationals crossed roughly 200 yards into Indian territory. Intelligence suggests the group was acting in coordination with Indian counterparts for the purpose of smuggling. As the group attempted to return to Bangladesh with various goods, they were intercepted by a patrol unit from the Pathariaduar Camp of the BSF 49 Battalion.
Confrontation and Fatal Outcome
The BGB press statement detailed that a physical confrontation ensued when the BSF attempted to halt the group. The suspected smugglers reportedly resisted the BSF patrol, leading to a “scuffle and altercation” between the parties. During the height of the struggle, BSF personnel discharged at least two rounds of buckshot (pellet fire) at the group.
Both Md. Mursalin and Nabir Hossain sustained critical gunshot injuries during the engagement. They were subsequently detained by the BSF and transported to a local Indian medical facility for emergency treatment. However, both men succumbed to their injuries while undergoing clinical intervention. The BSF formally notified the BGB of the deaths on Saturday morning, leading to the arrangement of the afternoon flag meeting.
Broader Context of Border Security
This incident underscores the ongoing tensions and security challenges along the Bangladesh-India border, particularly in regions prone to informal trade and movement. The BGB 60 Battalion has reiterated its commitment to monitoring border activities and preventing unauthorized crossings, while also maintaining communication channels with the BSF to resolve such incidents through departmental dialogue.
Local authorities in Kasba have taken custody of the bodies following the flag meeting to complete necessary legal formalities and post-mortem documentation before releasing the remains to the bereaved families in Dhajannagar and Madhupur for burial. The BGB continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the presence of the large group in the border zone at the time of the shooting.
