A special operation conducted on the Sylhet-to-Dhaka-bound Parabat Express resulted in the seizure of 18 kilograms of cannabis and the arrest of one individual, according to Bhairab Railway Police. The arrest was made on Sunday night during a targeted raid based on confidential information.
The detained individual has been identified as Tofazzal, also known as Amir, aged 27. Railway police said he was taken into custody after officers recovered the narcotics from luggage stored inside an air-conditioned carriage of the intercity train.
According to police sources, the operation was carried out at approximately 9:45 pm by officers from Bhairab Railway Police Station. Acting on intelligence reports, the officers boarded the Parabat Express and searched the train’s air-conditioned ‘B’ coach.
During the search, police inspected three school bags placed on the overhead luggage rack inside the compartment. Upon examination, officers discovered nine separate packets wrapped in adhesive tape. Each packet reportedly weighed around two kilograms, bringing the total quantity of seized cannabis to approximately 18 kilograms.
Masuk Mia, Additional Superintendent of Police of Dhaka Railway District Police, confirmed the incident. He stated that the operation was conducted on the basis of prior intelligence and led to both the recovery of the illegal substance and the arrest of the suspect.
Police have seized the recovered materials as evidence. A case has been filed against Tofazzal under the relevant narcotics laws, and further legal proceedings are underway.
Railway police officials said the authorities continue to carry out regular enforcement drives aimed at preventing drug trafficking through railway routes. They noted that passenger trains are subject to monitoring and search operations as part of broader security measures intended to ensure passenger safety and curb the transport of illegal goods.
Law enforcement agencies in Bangladesh have in recent years increased surveillance on public transport networks, including railway routes, due to concerns over their use in narcotics transportation. Railway police stated that intelligence-led searches, baggage inspections, and patrol activities are being conducted routinely across major train services.
The Parabat Express is a regular intercity train operating between Sylhet and Dhaka, serving a large number of passengers daily. Railway authorities maintain that operational security and passenger protection remain priorities alongside anti-smuggling efforts.
