Chhatak Awami League Leader Arrested in Police Operation

Police in Sunamganj’s Chhatak have arrested Mohammad Aftab Uddin, president of the Kalaruka union unit of the Awami League, during a special operation known as ‘Devil Hunt’.

Aftab Uddin, 53, was arrested on Saturday, 8 August. He is the son of Mohammad Fakhr Uddin of Rajapur village in Kalaruka union, according to police sources.

Police said the local political leader is an accused in a case filed at Chhatak Police Station. He was arrested in connection with Case No. 28(7)2025, although authorities did not immediately provide further details about the allegations or the specific charges brought against him.

The arrest took place as police continued their special operation in the area. Such operations involve efforts to locate and apprehend individuals wanted in connection with criminal cases, with police checking information and acting on cases registered at the relevant station.

Chhatak Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mizanur Rahman confirmed Aftab Uddin’s arrest. He said the accused was taken into custody in connection with the case and subsequently produced before the appropriate court.

The arrest of a serving union-level Awami League leader has drawn attention locally, particularly as the police operation continues in Chhatak. However, police have not disclosed further details about the circumstances leading to the case or the evidence against Aftab Uddin.

The allegations against him remain subject to the legal process, and his arrest does not by itself establish guilt. Further proceedings in the case will determine the next steps.

Police said the arrested accused had been handed over to the court after the necessary legal procedures were completed.
