A leader of the Manikganj district Chhatra League was seriously injured after the tendons in both his hands and legs were allegedly severed at a brick kiln late on Sunday night.
The incident reportedly took place in an area along the boundary between Manikganj Sadar and Singair police stations. The injured man, Bashir Uddin, has been taken to a hospital in Dhaka, where he is receiving treatment in a critical condition.
Bashir is the deputy employment affairs secretary of the Manikganj district Chhatra League. He is the son of Mohammad Monir and a resident of Palorar Char village in Betila Mitra Union of Manikganj Sadar upazila.
Fahim Asjad, assistant superintendent of police for the Singair Circle, said police had not immediately established who was responsible for the attack. Investigators are, however, considering whether a dispute over local dominance may have played a role.
“We cannot identify the people involved at this stage. The matter is being investigated seriously,” the police official said.
Singair police station officer-in-charge Mazharul Islam said the alleged attackers were known to Bashir and were also residents of Manikganj Sadar. Police are examining why Bashir was taken to the brick kiln late at night and who was directly involved in the attack.
The officer said the process of filing a case was under way. Investigators are also seeking to establish the sequence of events before the assault and the circumstances in which Bashir arrived at the brick kiln.
The incident has led to competing political allegations. On Monday afternoon, Chhatra League issued a statement accusing Chhatra Dal of involvement in the attack.
Chhatra Dal rejected the allegation, describing it as baseless and an attempt to spread misinformation.
Abdul Khaleq Shuvo, president of the Manikganj district Chhatra Dal, claimed that the incident resulted from an internal dispute within Chhatra League, allegedly linked to disagreements over the sharing of money from drug-related activities.
According to Shuvo, Bashir had been at the brick kiln with his friends late at night and was attacked by people who were with him. He alleged that accusations against Chhatra Dal were being made to conceal an internal conflict and that misleading claims were subsequently being circulated on social media.
Those allegations have not been independently verified. Police have also not confirmed the motive suggested by either political group.
The investigation is now focused on identifying the people who were with Bashir at the brick kiln, determining why he was there and establishing what happened immediately before the attack. Police are also working to identify those directly responsible for the assault.
The serious nature of Bashir’s injuries has added urgency to the investigation. However, until investigators establish the sequence of events and gather evidence, it remains unclear whether the attack was connected to a local power struggle, an internal dispute, a political conflict or another motive.
Bashir remains under treatment at a hospital in Dhaka. Police said further legal action would follow as evidence emerges and those responsible are identified.
