Child Assault Case Sparks Outrage in Cumilla

A deeply disturbing incident in northern Bangladesh’s Cumilla has triggered widespread public anger after an eight-year-old boy was allegedly abducted, assaulted, and robbed of his gold ornaments in a cornfield. Police have detained a teenage suspect believed to be closely related to the victim.

According to local sources, the incident occurred on Monday, 30 March, in North Hasanpur village under Ward No. 3 of Daudkandi Municipality in Daudkandi. The accused reportedly lured the child away from his home and took him to a secluded maize field near the village.

Once isolated, the boy was allegedly subjected to a brutal physical assault. Witness accounts suggest he was beaten severely before his gold earrings and a gold chain were forcibly removed. The perpetrators then abandoned him in the field in a critically injured state.

Local residents later discovered the child lying unconscious and rushed him first to Gouripur Hospital. As his condition deteriorated, he was transferred to Daudkandi Upazila Health Complex and subsequently referred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment. Medical officials have described his condition as critical, noting serious injuries to his head, back, and limbs.

Doctors have confirmed that the child is suffering from multiple trauma injuries, and his survival remains uncertain.

In a swift development, villagers reportedly apprehended a teenage suspect on Tuesday night from the Dhakar Gaon area and handed him over to the police. Authorities have confirmed that the accused is the victim’s paternal cousin, adding a troubling familial dimension to the case.

Law enforcement officials stated that investigations are ongoing and that formal legal proceedings will be initiated once the complaint is fully processed. The suspect is currently in custody and is expected to be produced before a court following the filing of a case.

The victim’s family has demanded the harshest possible punishment, expressing shock and grief over the brutality inflicted upon a young child within their own extended family. The child’s father has called for swift justice, stating that such violence against a minor is unbearable and unacceptable.
