SYLHET — Health authorities in the Sylhet division have confirmed a new case of coronavirus, marking the reemergence of the virus in the north-eastern region after a hiatus of nearly 14 months.
According to an official situation report released by the Office of the Divisional Director of Health in Sylhet on Sunday, 9 August, a 55-year-old man hailing from Bishwanath upazila tested positive for COVID-19. The patient is currently receiving targeted treatment in an isolation cabin at Shahid Dr Shamsuddin Ahmed Hospital, the primary medical facility designated for infectious disease care across the division.
Dr Mohammad Nure Alam Shamim, Assistant Director (Disease Control) of the Sylhet Health Directorate, confirmed the diagnosis late on Saturday night. He stated that healthcare personnel immediately moved the individual into isolation upon receiving the positive test results to mitigate any risk of localized transmission. Medical staff at the hospital are keeping the patient under close observation, strictly adhering to established infection control protocols.

The latest diagnosis breaks a prolonged 14-month streak during which the Sylhet division reported zero new coronavirus infections. Official health department records indicate that the last laboratory-confirmed case of COVID-19 in the region was logged on 15 June 2025.
